Organized by the Ministry of Education (Taiwan), sponsored by iSee Taiwan Foundation, Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation, and TPCA Environment Foundation, and is executed by Asia University., Taiwan International Student Design Competition is now in its thirteenth year. The theme of this year’s competition is “Action.” This year, the Competition attracted 20,377 entries from 860 schools and departments in 64 countries/regions around 5 continents, which is still a high record of submissions received.

The Preliminary Selection in Taiwan of 2020TISDC took place on August 29th and August 30th at Taipei New Horizon. 40 experts in design from Taiwan, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, United States of America, United Kingdom, and Germany were invited to form the panels of jurors for Product Design Category, Visual Design Category and Digital Animation Category. Owing to the great amount of entries the Competition received, it took the jurors two days to finish screening all the entries. After rounds of strict and enthusiastic screening and discussion, 590 entries were eventually on the shortlist, which included works from Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Korea, India, USA, Canada, Brazil, Russia, United Kingdom, Poland, Denmark, Germany, United Arab Emirates, and Newzealand. These finalists will pursue the Grand Prix, which is worth NT$400,000, and the other awards in each category in the Final Selection.

Regarding the entries that became the finalists, the conveners of the three categories, including Mr. Wei-Shen Yi and Mr. Wei-Tang Feng for Product Design Category, Mr. Chun-Cheng Chou and Mr. Ben Wang for Visual Design Category, and Mr. Hsun-Chun Chuang and Mr. Po-Chou Chi for Digital Animation Category, all agreed that “Action,” the theme of this year’s competition, is the concept to respond to “SDGs: Sustainable Development Goals,” which were advocated by the UN. This theme will then serve to remind students worldwide that in order to prevent disasters from happening, immediate actions must be taken, and that they can use design to resolve global sustainable development issues and thus amply fulfill their responsibilities as global citizens. Thus, they saw many participants demonstrate the relationship between humans and the environment in their selected works. This indicated that young participants did pay attention to this international social issue and tried to express their thoughts and find a way to solve problems in their entries, which impressed the jurors a lot.

The shortlist will be announced and posted on the official website of 2020TISDC in the next two weeks. Following the Preliminary Selection in Taiwan, 2020TISDC is going to hold the Online Final Selection from September 21st to October 30th. 6 domestic and 39 international designers  will form the panels of jurors to demonstrate the diversity and credibility of TISDC and come out with the winners of this year’s competition. On September 26th (Sat.), TISDC will hold an International Design Masters Lecture Series in Huashan 1914 Creative Park M4A 2F-Sake Factory, inviting international design masters to give a talk and share their design experiences with the audience. On October 16th (Fri.), TISDC will hold an International Design Masters Lecture Series in the National Library of Public Information in Taichung, and will invite three design masters to be the lecturer for New Asia Design Workshop on October 17th to 18th. Those who are interested in design shouldn’t miss the golden opportunity to have exciting discussions  with international masters. To know more about 2020 TISDC, visit https://www.tisdc.org/.

Organized by the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education (Taiwan), executed by the Department of Visual Communication Design of Asia University, and sponsored by iSee Taiwan Foundation, Sayling Wen Cultural and Educational Foundation, TPCA Environment Foundation, 2020 Taiwan International Student Design Competition held the 4th New Asia Design Workshop at Asia University on 17th and 18th of October, 2020. The workshop intends to encourage students in cultural exchange and build up Taiwan Design’s international status and image. Three prestigious international designers including Mr. Gideon Loewy from Denmark, Mr. Felix von Bomhard from Germany, and Mr. Gerard Jasperse from Netherlands were invited to be the instructors of the workshop, and with the cooperating teacher Assistant Prof. Hung-Wen Hsu, Assistant Prof. Hsiao-Pei Hou and Associate Prof. Jia-An Lin, the event was rounded off successfully.

The New Asia Design Workshop targeted at the theme of “Action” of 2020 Taiwan International Student Design Competition. The international instructors led the students to think, observe and experience creatively. Not only could it broaden their horizon but also gain more inspiration to finish their work with different concepts. To break the language barrier between lecturers and students, each lecturer was accompanied by an interpreter so that students could understand what the lecturers wanted to express immediately and correctly and thus get more involved in the Workshop. The Workshop boosted international exchange and provide students who are interested in design with an opportunity to learn from international design experts face to face. There are around 90 students from 14 universities and departments in Taiwan attended the Workshop.

After the two-day workshop, students got inspired by the experienced designers and had came out with new thoughts and new design energy. Some students also mentioned that it was such a pity that the workshop only lasted for two days and hoped they could have more time to learn from the instructors. At the same time, the instructors were deeply touched by the student’s devotion to the workshop and were all impressed by the works which the students produced in such a short period of time. Students have also made friends from different fields with the same interest, experienced team work and brain storming which gave them an unforgettable experience.
