Taiwan International Student Design Competition (TISDC), the largest-scale student design competition worldwide, is organized by the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education (Taiwan). This year, TISDC is sponsored by iSee Taiwan Foundation, Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation, and TPCA Environment Foundation and executed by the Department of Visual Communication Design, Asia University. TISDC is now in its seventeenth year. This year’s competition theme, “Equality,” encouraged students to advocate for equal respect and treatment through design, fostering a society that embraces diversity and harmony. This year, TISDC received 19,667 entries from 1,138 schools/departments in 64 countries/regions. The number of participating entries showcased a notable scale.

The physical final selection event took place on October 8, 2024, at the multi-showcase exhibition hall in Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in Taipei. Professional jurors from four categories—Product Design, Visual Design, Digital Animation, and Manufacturer Designated—were present, including 6 conveners from Taiwan and 21 representatives from international design organizations. These included Kevin Swanepoel from The One Club for Creativity / ADC Awards(ADC), Piotr Swiatek from Bureau of European Design Associations (BEDA), Pidhit Virankabutra from Creative Economy Agency (CEA) of Thailand, Aken Ke from Chinese Industrial Design Association (CIDA),Pradyumna Vyas from Confederation of Indian Industry (CII),Jason Frazier from Colorado International Invitational Poster Exhibition (CIIPE), Teresa Franquerira from Cumulus Global Association of Art and Design Education and Research, Leeyau Chun Chuan from Design Business Chamber Singapore (DBCS), Hung Keung from Hong Kong Federation of Design and Creative Industries (FHKDCI),Andrew Simpson from Good Design Australia (GDA),Stefan Anderl from German Design Council (GDC), Prananda Luffiansyah Malasan from Indonesia Design Development Center (IDDC), Ivette Valenzuela from International Poster Biennial in Mexico (IPBM), Norito Shinmura from Japan Graphic Design Association (JAGDA), Hisakazu Shimizu frrom Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP), Jeong Hyun Ra from Korea Ensemble of Contemporary Design (KECD), Sio Leong Chao from Macau Designers Association (MDA), Debbie Gan from Malaysia Design Archive (MDA), David Appiah from Pan-Afrikan Design Institute (PADI),Kelley Cheng from The Design Alliance Asia (tDA Asia), and Tony Chang from World Design Organization® (WDO), forming a prestigious panel of 27 judges from across five continents.

The selection of works was attentive in presenting the meaning of the theme “Equality” by the jury panel. This allows the judges to see more diversity in students’creativities. Through this event, has not only increased international exchange but has also allowed us to see different perspectives and viewpoints. We believe it has also allowed international judges to see Taiwan’s emphasis on design once again.

Taiwan International Student Design Competition (TISDC) 2024 campus tour promotional event arrived at Ling-Tung University on May 31st (Fri)!

Under the enthusiastic invitation of Ling-Tung University, with one hundred participants joining in the promotion on-site. The theme of this competition is “Equality,” and we aim to link it with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by the United Nations in 2015 for achievement by 2030. We call on students to treat others with equal respect and care, and through this promotion, further educate the audience on the competition’s regulations.

This time we also invited CEO of Leafer Circular Design – Victor Wu. In addition to leading students to understand the concept of circular economy with simple and clear concepts, the speaker also shared many practical cases of circular economy that he has participated in.

Finally, we express our special thanks to Ling-Tung University for their warm invitation, allowing the project to reach a wider audience. Special thanks to team leader An-Hui Qin for her great assistance. We also the active participation of everyone involved contributed to the successful conclusion of this promotional event!

Under the enthusiastic invitation from the Songshan High School of Commerce and Home Economics, a total of 180 teachers and students participated in this promotion. This year’s competition is themed “Equality,”and we aim to link it with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by the United Nations in 2015 for achievement by 2030. We call on students to treat others with equal respect and care, and through this promotion, further educate the audience to realize the competition’s regulations.

The seminar also invited the “The_Taiwan_Streetscape_Shirt” design team, winners of last year’s Special Prize from the Macau Designers Association, to share design concepts and creative ideas with the students present. They also shared insights on further education and career paths, offering guidance to students who uncertain about their future.

Special thanks go to Director He-JiaQi for her assistance; her support and participation played a crucial role in the success of the event. We hope this promotion will help more students understand the competition regulations and inspire creativity. Thanks to everyone’s enthusiastic participation, the promotional activities ended successfully.

The 8th “New Asia Design Workshop” finally took place from May 18 to May 19, 2024 at Asia University ! Organized by the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education (Taiwan), executed by the Department of Visual Communication Design of Asia University, and sponsored by the iSee Taiwan Foundation, Sayling Wen Cultural and Educational Foundation, TPCA Environment Foundation (Special Award Sponsor), which designated a special award, and Cultural Affairs Bureau, Chiayi City. Prestigious international designers, Kimming Yap from Singapore, Leslie Chan from Hong Kong, and Kimiharu Obata from Japan, were invited as instructors for the workshop.

The workshop centered around the competition theme “Equality” and extended to encompass the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through the sharing of their personal experiences and project experiences by the three international designers, students in the workshop were able to incorporate the SDGs into their work. The instructors not only provided professional advice and comprehensive concepts but also taught students how to adapt their thinking to overcome challenges encountered during the creative process. Participants from different grades and fields exchanged and learned from each other during the workshop, resulting in outcomes that are even more astonishing and diverse.

The workshop provided a valuable opportunity for interaction and collaboration with international designers, allowing participants to gain many unique experiences through discussions and deliberations. With the assistance of an excellent interpreter, the instructors were able to accurately convey their thoughts and viewpoints to the students, enabling them to better understand and absorb the professional knowledge from the international speakers. Additionally, collaborative teachers were on hand to assist students, providing a comprehensive learning experience in the creative process. A total of approximately 50 students from various colleges and departments in Taiwan participated in the workshop.

The workshop spanned two days, during which participants gained rich experience and knowledge through hands-on practice and discussions. In the presentation session, students showcased their diligent efforts and heartfelt works from the past the day and a half. These works not only demonstrated their creativity and talent but also closely aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, reflecting concerns for environmental protection, social justice, and economic development. We believe that through such workshops, students will continue to unleash their creativity to create designs that resonate with people’s hearts. This year’s workshop has successfully concluded, and we hope that in the future, students will continue to make an impact through design! See you next year! The International Design Masters Series Lecture on May 17, 2024, at the Dadun Cultural Center in Taichung, attracted nearly 170 attendees and also streamed online for those who couldn’t attend in person. The event featured guest speakers from various countries: Kimming Yap, Operations Director of Creativeans from Singapore; Leslie Chan, founder of Leslie Chan Design Company from Hong Kong; and Kimiharu Obata, representative of Pioneer Production from Japan. Through the speakers’ presentations, design enthusiasts and students gained insights from different perspectives and disciplines, sparking creative inspiration across cultures. The lecture was inaugurated by the program host, Professor Apex Lin, and we were also honored to have Director Huang from TPCA Environment Foundation deliver a speech.

Lecture 1 – Kimming Yap: Designing in the Physical World

Kimming Yap, a product designer from Singapore, shared his thoughts on designing for the future. He divided design thinking into eight principles, combining physical theories to illustrate the relationship between people and design. By understanding these theories, one can view the world from different angles. He emphasized that empathy is crucial to creating good designs. Understanding the needs of others and the environment they are in is essential to creating products that help others. “When you aim to improve the world through design, no matter how small your power is, your actions can make a difference,” he urged, encouraging everyone that even small acts can impact society.

Lecture 2 – Leslie Chan: Local Sentiment with Global Perspective

Leslie Chan from Hong Kong shared his experience in taking on design projects, explaining how to communicate through design and gain public recognition. He stressed that designers must have appreciation and communication skills, as well as flexibility in using their designs, and learn to break existing frameworks to achieve breakthroughs. He concluded with four future design needs: empathy, altruism, co-prosperity, and the theory of seeking harmony in diversity, which resonates with this event’s theme of “Equality.” This helped the participating students better understand the theme of the competition.

Lecture 3 – Kimiharu Obata: The consideration of “SDGs in the Japanese Animation Industry” by Japanese anime producers.

Japanese animator Kimiharu Obata believes that “words have a soul, and what is spoken has an impact.” Therefore, he hopes that his works will bring some life insights to the audience. Long-time animator Mr. Obata, much like the various hero characters he draws, hopes for a world of mutual help and joy through his animations. He wishes for people from different worlds to combine their cultures to let society flourish and move towards a happy realm together.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to each outstanding lecturer and all participants, and a special thanks to Professor Shin Fu, Lee for perfectly concluding the event. We believe that this International Design Masters Series Lecture provided abundant insights for both the live and online audiences. We look forward to meeting everyone again in the future to create more extraordinary memories together.

The Project Director Prof. Apex Lin and Lecturer Miira Lin led the executive team to visit and promote TISDC at the last campus, USM University of Science Malaysia on 10^th May. Around 130 teachers and students joined the promotional events together.

The promotion campaign is mainly about introducing the theme“Equality” which is in accordance with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015. Lecturer Miira Lin shared many past winning works from Malaysia. She suggested students to connect with the sustainable development goals for the design works. Students do not have to worry about the work is not good enough. We hope to see that everyone can bring their past design works to participate in TISDC this year.

Special thanks to Dr. Siti Rohaya from USM University of Science Malaysia for helping TISDC arrange the promotional events and inviting all the teachers and students to join. With their assistance and support, the promotional events had rounded off. We look forward to all the student’s participation in 2024TISDC.

The online registration and work submissions of the 2024 Taiwan International Student Design Competition (known as TISDC), the largest student design competition in the world, starts today. The submission deadline is 15 July 2024, 23:59 (Taipei time: GMT +8:00). The theme “Equality” is in accordance with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015. The TISDC calls on students to treat others with the same level of respect and warmth. Students are encouraged to blend and co-create a more beautiful and diverse society through the power of design. This aims to realize the vision of ‘Equal Respect and Universal Love; Embracing Diversity and Fostering Harmony’.

TISDC has been held since 2008 and is now entering its 17th year. The number of international entries received has been growing. TISDC works hand in hand with international design associations and successfully attracts notable works from worldwide design colleges and institutions. Last year, a total of 18,367 submissions were received from 56 countries/regions and 1161 school departments and 85 of the submissions were selected by experts and won the awards.

Every year, TISDC invites professionals and designers around the world to be jurors. The impartiality and significance of TISDC has received great recognition. In the 2024 Jury, there will be more than 100 design professionals who will select the works that best interpret “Equality.” Phenomenal design pieces will be seen and presented to the world.

Same as last year, three categories are included, “Product Design,” “Visual Design,” and “Digital Animation.” More than 70 awards will be presented and the total prize money is up to NT$3,700,000 (approx. US$125,000). Once again, the winner of the Grand Prix will take home NT$400,000 prize (approx. US$13,000). Over 15 Special Prizes granted by International Design Associations, iSee Taiwan Foundation, and Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation will also be given away. As always, no submission/exhibition fees are required to enter the competition. Three Environmental Sustainability Awards and Special Region Awards of the Brand Special Awards were added this year. Sponsored by TPCA Environment Foundation, this Special Award aims to prompt ways of incorporating the circular concept into our environment, and looks for innovative takes on the concept essence of environment sustainability. This year, we also collaborate with Chiayi City Government and Cultural Affairs Bureau, Chiayi City Government to set 9 Chiayi City Special Prize. The goal is to create inspirational and highly potential design through the effort of industry-academia collaboration, and demonstrate the value of Taiwan design culture.

Organized by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education and sponsored by the iSee Taiwan Foundation, and the Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation. The “2024 Taiwan International Student Design Competition” (TISDC) co-hosted the “2024 Korean Award-Winning Students Exchange Event” with its long-term partner, the Korea Ensemble of Contemporary Design (KECD), on September 8th, 2024. The event was attended by TISDC Project Director Professor Apex, Lin Pang-Soong, and Project Associate Director Professor Lin Jun-Liang, along with KECD President Yoo Yoon-Ho, Vice President Jeong-Hyun Ra, and Vice President Lee Chia-Hua. Additionally, National Taiwan Normal University Department of Design Dean Su Wen-Ching and Kaohsiung Creators Association Director Chang Fang-Pang also participated.

The event specially invited Korean award-winning students from previous years to discuss innovative development and collaborative opportunities for young designers. This exchange aimed to enhance interactions between Korean youth designers and the international design community, further promoting cooperation among designers. KECD President Yoo Yoon-Ho proposed expanding such events and suggested establishing the “TKWC: TISDC Korea Winners Club” to provide a long-term platform for interaction among past Korean winners, encouraging more creative exchanges and international collaboration among young designers. The deep collaboration between KECD and TISDC also has laid a solid foundation for the future promotion of international design competitions and the cultivation of young design talent. Notably, two of the 2023 TISDC Grand Prize winners traveled from Busan to Seoul to attend this exchange, demonstrating the passion and proactive attitude of Korean students toward international design competitions.

As one of the world’s largest student design competitions, the Taiwan International Student Design Competition(TISDC) is dedicated to promoting the development of student innovation and providing opportunities for emerging designers to connect with the industry. Through this exchange event in Korea, award-winning Korean students shared their creative processes. They also gained deeper insights and valuable advice on future design trends through interactions with design associations.

In the 2023 Taiwan International Student Design Competition (TISDC), Korean students showcased outstanding performance, winning numerous awards. Na Yu Jin, Kim Hyerim, and Kim Gyuri from the University of Ulsan won the TISDC Grand Prize with their project “Emergency Shield,” demonstrating the exceptional creativity of young Korean designers on the international stage. Additionally, a design team from Kookmin University, Chung-Ang University, Hongik University, and Ewha Womans University won the Gold Award in Product Design with their project “Ourhour,” and other works received Bronze Prize and Honorable Mention, reflecting the excellent design capabilities of Korean students.

This exchange event not only provided participating Korean students with valuable inspiration from their previous award-winning experiences but also helped them broaden their design perspectives, laying a solid foundation for their future careers. The successful organization of this event further strengthened the long-standing partnership between TISDC and KECD and symbolizes the continued efforts of both nations to promote international collaboration among young designers. It aims to create more opportunities for interaction and growth for emerging designers worldwide.

2024 Taiwan International Student Design Competition

The “2024 Taiwan International Student Design Competition” successfully completed its online preliminary round from August 21 to 27, 2024. Organized by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education of Taiwan, and supported and sponsored by the Taiwan Foundation for the Blind, the Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation, and the Printed Circuit Board Environmental Protection Foundation, the competition was hosted by Asia University. This year’s competition, themed “Equality,” attracted 19,667 entries from 1,138 schools across 64 countries, showcasing an impressive scale of participation and intense competition.

This year’s competition is divided into three major categories: Product Design, Visual Design, and Digital Animation. The preliminary judging panel consisted of 91 professional designers from Taiwan, Singapore, Belgium, the United States, Malaysia, Japan, Thailand, Latvia, Ghana, Greece, Germany, Iran, Portugal, and other countries. After seven days of evaluation, the expert panel selected 567 works to advance to the next round. These shortlisted works come from 33 countries, including Taiwan, China, South Korea, India, Singapore, Mexico, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, and Finland. These finalists will compete for the grand prize of NT$400,000 and other various awards.

Regarding the overall trends of the shortlisted works, the conveners of the Product Design, Visual Design, and Digital Animation categories unanimously agreed that this year’s theme, “Equality,” perfectly aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It encourages participants to use the power of design to promote a vision of equality, inclusivity, and harmony in society. The entries deeply reflect interpersonal relationships and concern for society and the environment, showcasing not only the creative talents of student designers but also their profound understanding of sustainable development. We look forward to seeing these young designers continue to embody the spirit of equality and creativity, contributing to the realization of the SDGs and the creation of a better future.

Next, the final round of judging will take place on October 8, 2024, with a judging panel consisting of eight Taiwanese designers and 19 international designers, further demonstrating the diversity and credibility of the competition. The list of finalists for the final round will be announced within one to two weeks.

The promotion train of the TISDC is now coming to Mongolia. On August 13, the Korea Ensemble of Contemporary Design Association (KECD) hosted a workshop at the Radio & Television University in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

The event saw the active participation of 45 Mongolian design students, alongside 9 Korean and 3 Mongolian professors.

Following the workshop, President Yoo Yoon-ho of KECD took the opportunity to encourage Mongolian design students to participate in the 2025 Taiwan International Student Design Competition (TISDC), reflecting the growing international collaboration and exchange in the field of design.

Our heartfelt thanks go to President Yoo Yoon-ho of KECD for his invaluable assistance, which ensured the success of this event.

We look forward to continued interest and participation from colleges and universities in Mongolia, and we hope to see many outstanding works in next year’s competition.

The promotion train of the TISDC is now coming to the United States. On June 18, 2024, Professor Apex Lin, the project leader of the Taiwan International Student Design Competition (TISDC), visited New York to meet with D21 Global Partner NY ADC (New York Art Directors Club). This visit was to express gratitude for the long-standing collaboration with the world-renowned advertising design competition that has been established for 103 years. Professor Lin was received by Jenna Brandvold, the Education Manager, and Scott Graham, the Office Administrator.

Jenna provided a detailed introduction to the ADC, TDC, and One Show design competitions. Both parties discussed their long-term cooperative relationship and future development visions.

The 25th stop of the Taiwan International Student Design Competition (TISDC) Campus Promotion for the year 2024 has arrived at Chung Yuan Christian University!

This year, the TISDC visited Chung Yuan Christian University on May 24, 2024 (Friday). The event featured an engaging speech by Annie Huang, Regional Project Leader of the Greenpeace, titled “Good Design, Achieving Sustainable Communication.” We were honored to be invited by the Department of Commercial Design at Chung Yuan Christian University, and joined 25 faculty and students at the event.

Annie Huang opened the discussion by addressing the serious environmental issues facing the world, emphasizing the importance of design communication. How to make the public face and understand the importance of environmental improvement is a crucial topic for the younger generation of students. Annie also presented many examples of projects carried out by Greenpeace, such as the lighthearted storyline of the short animation, with its simple yet emotionally rich themes, which has endeared it to both elementary school teachers and children alike. On the other hand, The “Last Tree” series from Green Future, aimed at older students, presents slightly more serious content, with endings that resonate with the audience, leaving them pondering about the future of our world. Overall, the sharing was profound and captivating.

We would like to express our gratitude once again to the Department of Commercial Design at Chung Yuan Christian University for their invitation, and especially to Professor Frank Huang for his assistance and arrangements, as well as the enthusiastic participation of the students, which ensured the smooth and successful execution of the event!

The Taiwan International Student Design Competition (TISDC) 2024 Campus Tour Promotion Event visited Chang Jung Christian University on Wednesday, May 29th!

Invited by the enthusiastic Digital Media Design Department of Chang Jung Christian University, we promoted the event with the project manager of the Design Deep Cultivation Plan – Warring States Strategy. We were honored to have advertising director Chen Rongkuan give a lecture, with about 90 teachers and students participating. This year’s competition theme is “Equality,” and we strive to align it with the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed in 2015. We call on students to treat others with equal respect and care. Through this promotion, we provided further understanding of the competition’s guidelines.

Finally, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Chang Jung Christian University for their warm invitation, allowing the project to reach more people. Special thanks to Director Chen Yongzheng for his strong support. Your active participation made this promotional event a perfect success!

Taiwan International Student Design Competition (TISDC) 2024 campus tour promotional event has arrived at the last stop of Fu-Hsin Trade and Arts School on June 12th (Wed)!

Under the enthusiastic invitation of Fu-Hsin Trade and Arts School, we promoted the event together with the project manager of the project Design Plows Deep for the International Design Competition (IDC), with one hundred fifty participants joining in the promotion on-site. The theme of this competition is “Equality,” and we aim to link it with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by the United Nations in 2015 for achievement by 2030. We call on students to treat others with equal respect and care, and through this promotion, further educate the audience on the competition’s regulations.

Finally, we express our special thanks to Fu-Hsin Trade and Arts School for their warm invitation, allowing the project to reach a wider audience—furthermore, special thanks to team leader Yang-Ting Lin for his great assistance. We also appreciate the active participation of everyone who was involved and contributed to the successful conclusion of this promotional event!
