Organized by the Ministry of Education (Taiwan), sponsored by iSee Taiwan Foundation, Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation, and TPCA Environment Foundation, and is executed by Asia University. Taiwan International Student Design Competition is now in its fourteenth year. The theme of this year’s competition is “Regenerate.” This year, the Competition attracted 21,901 entries from 970 schools and departments in 59 countries/regions around 6 continents, which is still a high record of submissions received.

The 2021TISDC Preliminary Selection in Taiwan of took place online on August 20th to August 29th online. 80 experts in design from Taiwan, Germany, Denmark, Scotland, France, Canada, Malaysia, Japan, China, Thailand, Switzerland, United States of America and Hong Kong were invited to form the jury panels for Product Design Category, Visual Design Category and Digital Animation Category. Even if the world is impacted by COVID-19, there’s still a great amount of entries the competition received. In the ten days of online Preliminary Selection, 30 jurors from product design category, 30 jurors from visual design category and 20 jurors from digital animation category finished screening all the entries. After the strict and enthusiastic screening and the discussion of joint meeting of judging panel conveners, 981 entries were eventually shortlisted, which included works from Taiwan, India, United States of America, Japan, Korea, United Kingdom, Indonesia, Iran, China, Singapore, Thailand, Russia, Hong Kong, Sweden, Italy, Malaysia, Czech Republic, Vietnam, Australia, Macau, Republic of Slovenia, Belgium, Israel, Canada, Spain, Poland, Bolivia, Ukraine, France, Switzerland and Germany. These finalists will pursue the Grand Prix, which is worth NT$400,000, and the other awards in each category in the Final Selection.

Regarding the entries that became the finalists, the conveners of the three categories, including Mr. Kevin Yu-Jui Chou, the design director of KEV Design Studio and Ms. Peggy Wung, the Co-founder of Jin Tang Culture Co., Ltd for Product Design Category, Mr. James Chen, the creative director of Magic Creative Design and Ms. Vivi Liou, the founder and design director of Leaf Design for Visual Design Category, and Mr. Chun-Chieh Lien, the founder of dot2dot and Ms. Chishan Sandra Liu, the head of production at HTC VIVE ORIGINALS for Digital Animation Category, all agreed that “Regenerate,” the theme of this year’s competition, is the concept to respond to “SDGs: Sustainable Development Goals,” which were advocated by the UN. This theme will then serve to remind students worldwide that it is important to look back to what has been created and think outside the box. Students use their design to resolve global sustainable development issues and thus amply fulfill their responsibilities as global citizens. Thus, jurors saw many participants demonstrate the relationship between humans and humans with environment in their selected works. This indicated that young participants did pay attention to this international social issue and tried to express their thoughts and find a way to solve problems in their entries, which impressed the jurors a lot.

The shortlist will be announced and posted on the official website of 2021TISDC in the next two weeks. Following the Preliminary Selection in Taiwan, 2021TISDC is going to hold the Online Final Selection from September 23rd to October 22nd. 6 domestic and 39 international designers will form the jury panels to demonstrate the diversity and credibility of TISDC and announce the winners of this year’s competition. Best Regards,

2021 Taiwan International Student Design Competition

The International Design Masters Lecture Series was held online for the first time this year. Themed on sustainable development goals (SDGs), the event was graced by the lectures of three professional designers: Professor Mugendi M’Rithaa from Kenya, Professor Isabel Herguera from Spain, and renowned designer Chen Pu from Taiwan. The event started with opening remarks by the program director of TISDC Chair Professor Apex Lin, followed by a speech by Simon Chen, the president of TPCA Environment Foundation, which is the sponsor of the Environmental Sustainability Award in this year’s Taiwan International Student Design Competition.

The first lecturer of the event was the founder and designer of 247 Visual Arts Mr. Chen Pu from Taiwan. The topic was “Jointly Epiphyte – Design Ecosystem, Catalyst, and Derivation.” During his speech, Chen shared his design experiences, introduced the audience to different design mindsets and patterns, and encouraged students to find inspiration from the nature. As designers, despite being busy with work, it’s important to stay true to themselves and make sure that they are satisfied with their every piece of work. In addition, he mentioned that a few years ago, he was sponsored by iSee Taiwan Foundation, the sponsor of this year’s Taiwan International Student Design Competition, to make a design proposal in Africa. Learning a lot throughout the process, he genuinely hoped that design students could have the opportunity to exchange with international design organizations and explore different cultures in the future.

After that, we welcomed the professor of animation at Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln (KHM) Professor Isabel Herguera with her speech “An Open Classroom: A Seminar on Animation Production That Takes Place Simultaneously Across Continents, Languages and Cultures.” Professor Herguera talked about her experiences of animation production using the animation film Letters From the Jungle as an example. The film is based on the letters written by ex-FARC guerrilla warriors, which described the toughest moments they went through during the Colombian conflict. This collaborative animation project was completed by institutions and art centers in several countries, including India, Mexico, Colombia, China, and Germany. Moreover, she mentioned that the animation industry was not severely impacted by the pandemic like other industries were. Instead, she was pleased to see that there have been more and more animation films around the world. She said that hopefully there would be even more talented animators in the industry to bring us more unique and diverse styles of animation films.

Last but not least, the President Emeritus of the World Industrial Design Organization (WDO) Professor Mugendi M’Rithaa enlightened us with the topic “Creativity for Resilience: Design and the UN SDGs.” He shared with us an African proverb, “If you don’t wish to get eaten by the crocodile, cross the river in a crowd,” pinpointing the importance of combating COVID-19 collectively. During his speech, he also introduced the audience to the seven SDGs WDO is currently promoting, which are Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, and Goal 17: Partnership for the Goals. After knowing the meaning of these seven goals, hopefully each participant can integrate design with the environment and understand the importance of sustainability.

The International Design Masters Lecture Series successfully came to an end after the inspiring lectures of these design masters. Thank you to all the participants for their attendance. We would also like to extend our appreciation to the distinguished guests and teachers. Their efforts and participation were what made this event possible.

The winners of the 2021 Taiwan International Student Design Competition, one of the world’s largest design competition for students, organized by the Ministry of Education, have just been announced. The theme of this year’s competition was Regenerate. It emphasizes forming bridges between the past and the future, while at the same time discarding staleness and being innovative; changing how we look at things and thereby opening our minds to creative new approaches.

The design competition attracted 21,901 entries by students at design schools around the world. From these, the panel of judges first selected 981 semi-finalists and then selected 76 outstanding design entries to receive awards.

The 76 awards comprise more than fifty sponsored by the Ministry of Education, namely the Grand Prix; and a gold, a silver, three bronze prizes, and 12 honorable mentions in each of the three categories: Product Design, Visual Design, and Digital Animation. There are also 22 International Design Association Special Prizes, co-sponsored by iSee Taiwan Foundation and by the Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation, and two Environmental Sustainability Awards, sponsored by the TPCA Environment Foundation.

The extremely creative and innovative designs of Taiwanese students did very well in this year’s competition. Entries by Taiwanese students won 32 of the 76 awards available, including the Grand Prix, as well as awards in the Product Design, Visual Design, and Digital Animation categories, and two Specified Special Awards. This clearly demonstrates that the vibrant work of Taiwan’s design students is at an international level.

This year’s Grand Prix, together with a monetary prize of NTD$ 400,000 was awarded to Wu Yu-Hsin from Shih Chien University, for the entry Inflatable Stretcher. The gold prizes for each of the three categories were awarded to similarly impressive entries: to Lin Ya-Zhu from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, for Re-pulp in the Product Design category; to Wei You-Lin from Fu Jen Catholic University, for All love is equal, in the Visual Design category; and to Marika Tamura, a student at Ringling College of Art and Design, in Florida in the US, for Final Deathtination, in the Digital Animation category.

The second International Design Masters Lecture Series was held online and streamed live on both TISDC’s official YouTube channel and Facebook, allowing design lovers to join us whichever way! Starting out with the 17 goals of the SDGs along with the continuation of this year’s theme, we’ve invited three professional designers as our lecturers, including Mr. Akio Ogawa from Japan, Professor Robert Engler from Switzerland, and Mr. Kevin Yang from Taiwan. The second International Design Masters Lecture Series started with Associate Project Director Mr. Fang’s welcome speech followed by the address from Mr. Lai, the CEO of TPCF (sponsor of this year’s Environmental Sustainability Award).

First off, Mr. Akio Ogawa shared the importance of logo design as well as the whole concept throughout his lecture: “COP10 and Aichi SDGs Environmental Mark Concept & Design Process. Braille misprint reuse design process.” Strong identifiable logo designs carry the core essentials of groups or businesses which then conveys their ideals to the public. Also, he mentioned his participation in SDGs related international conferences and events, including logo designs and the development of identity systems (e.g., The State of the World’s Children 2005, The 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity 2015). Mr. Akio Ogawa’s lecture revolves around the process of logo designing and concept conveyance. We believe that this lecture can inspire the younger generation to expand their knowledge in the logo design field.

Secondly, Mr. Kevin Yang, the Taiwanese CEO of 5% Design Action, shared his own experience and understanding towards design throughout his lecture: Innovative Design Thinking for Better Society. He started the lecture by asking all of us whether design is able to guide us towards the future and provide a sustainable innovative society. He believes the answer is a hard yes. The word “design” can not only solve problems but also create its own value to cope with the drastic changes to our contemplation towards society. For instance, the number of food delivery platforms have increased throughout these two years contributing to tons of trash and waste. The purpose of design is highly connected with the rapid speed of evolution. Mr. Kevin Yang founded 5% Design Action to collect the core elements of all sorts of problems and allow the public to quickly understand these issues through visualized design interfaces.

Last but not least, the famous Swiss director, Professor Robert Engler, shared the relationship between human activities and animation through his lecture: “Animation as a Social Tool.” He mentioned that movie animation is a tool to entertain people or a media to convey messages to the public. Animations in advertisements convey information by attracting people’s attention. Animation can also be seen as a teaching tool, a book of wonders, or an opportunity to renovate our society. Professor Robert Engler also shared his experience in leading a special workshop for handicapped students. Animation was a whole new challenge for them and Professor Robert Engler managed to help them walk out of their darkest times. He believes the process of creating the animation is way more important than the results.

Special thanks to the three wonderful designers and their lectures. We would also like to thank Associate Project Director Mr. Lee for his closing speech. The second International Design Masters Lectures Series has come to a perfect ending. Once again, we would like to thank all the participants for making our event a huge success!

Organized by the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education (Taiwan), executed by the Department of Visual Communication Design of Asia University, and sponsored by the iSee Taiwan Foundation, Sayling Wen Cultural and Educational Foundation, and TPCA Environment Foundation, 2021 Taiwan International Student Design Competition held the 5th New Asia Design Workshop online at Asia University on the 30th and 31st of October, 2021. Three prestigious international designers including Mr. Omijika MAME from Japan, Mr. Janaka Rajapakse from Sri Lanka, and Mr. Johann Geiger from Germany were invited to be the instructors of the workshop.

This year’s workshop theme includes both SDGs and the continuance of 2021TISDC’s theme: “Regenerate – building upon the foundation of the past and adopting a new perspective to forge a path into the future and give rise to a new paradigm.” The three international designers utilized their own unique experiences to lead and inspire the students to observe and contemplate from various perspectives which would greatly help with the students’ designs, thus stimulating their creative energy!

The online workshop was held through video conferencing which allowed many students to have the opportunity to participate in this event. Not only does this event promote international exchange, but also provides a whole new platform and method for students that love design to have the opportunity to learn from the international designers in one-on-one mini consulting classes.

In order to break language barriers, each lecturer was accompanied by an interpreter so that students could understand what the lecturers wanted to express, thus being more involved in the workshop. An estimate of 72 students from 30 different universities and departments in Taiwan participated in the workshop.

The three lecturers shared different design methods with their own experiences which further on stimulated students’ creative design inspiration. Lots of students gave us positive feedback regarding our two-day workshop. All three lecturers had different teaching styles which brought whole new perspectives to students. Both lecturers and students very much enjoyed our two-day event. Once again, we would like to thank TISDC for this wonderful event and we hope to have the opportunity to participate in this workshop again next year.
