The 2025 TISDC campus promotion tour arrived at the School of Film and New Media at Taipei National University of the Arts on May 21. For this session, we were honored to invite designer Mr. Tung-Yang Lee, founder of Huosin International Design Co., Ltd, to deliver an inspiring lecture titled “Sustainable Design: From Practice to the Future.” Mr. Lee shared his hands-on experience working with over a dozen types of recycled heterogeneous materials and collaborating with more than 30 renowned brands.

As sustainability becomes a growing marketing slogan among enterprises, Mr. Lee remains committed to creating a genuinely circular design path rooted in the principles of a circular economy. During the talk, he posed a series of thought-provoking questions that challenge conventional definitions of “sustainability”: “Is a biodegradable product truly sustainable? What about repairable goods? Or reusable materials?” From his perspective, only sustainability that can be quantified holds true value—and no design should claim to be sustainable if it leads to more resource waste.

The brand symbol of Re-Heart, “Re,” represents a return to origin—a philosophy of cyclical renewal. Embracing the idea of “how wonderful it would be if everything could be reused,” the company starts with by-products and waste generated by corporations, transforming them through design thinking and upcycling to re-enter the product life cycle.

Currently, Re-Heart’s core technology focuses on granulating industrial waste, blending it with resin, and remolding it into new materials—realizing the goal of “replacing virgin materials with reclaimed ones.” This is not just recycling—it’s creative upcycling.

Looking to the future, Mr. Lee is also actively embracing digital and intelligent design methods. He shared how his team now leverages AI tools and generative technologies to integrate three software platforms and generate a complete furniture design proposal in just 3 minutes and 45 seconds. This enhances both efficiency and client communication while making material usage more intuitive and visually clear.

This lecture not only introduced students to the integration of AI and innovative material applications in creating truly sustainable, upgradable, and measurable design solutions, but also encouraged them to submit their work to the 2025 TISDC International Design Competition, which opened for entries on May 12. We wish all participants the very best and outstanding results!

The 2025 TISDC competition is now open for submissions!(Registration Period: May 12 – July 7)
We warmly welcome all interested students to seize this opportunity and join in!

On 15th May, the executive team of the 2024 Taiwan International Student Design Competition (2024TISDC) went to the Shin Min High School to promote this year’s competition. There were about 280 people on the scene.

The theme of 2024 TISDC is “Equality”, which is related to the Sustainable Development Goals (the SDGs) proposed by the United Nations in 2015. TISDC hopes that young designers can develop their design concepts through this competition and improve daily lives as well as make the world a better place.

This lecture also invited the founder of Tosky Design, Mr. Chien-Chen Lai. Mr. Lai not only shared numerous excellent works but also narrated the process of gradually becoming a designer. On the surface, it seems to be adorned with numerous awards, but behind it lie the hardships and setbacks and how to adjust to them.

Designer Lai also encourages students to actively participate in competitions, believing that fruitful results can be harvested after putting in effort.

Finally, we would like to thank again to Shin Min High School for their participation. Looking forward to receiving many entries from students and hope they get good results and win awards in 2024 TISDC.

The 2025 TISDC campus promotion event arrived at Shih Chien University on May 7.

This session specially invited Lee Po-Chen, the founder and creative director of PROJECTbyH, who has managed his personal brand for over 12 years. Under the theme “Returning to Nature Through the Search for Context” he shared profound insights and experiences in brand management, sustainable practices, and design creation.

The event was hosted by Associate Professor Hsieh Yong-Hsu, co-chair of the TISDC program. She introduced the key themes of this year’s 2025 TISDC competition, emphasizing the design topic of “DIVERSITY” and encouraging participants to showcase innovative thinking and social values through their designs.

Creative Director Lee Po-Chen adheres to the craftsman spirit of “personally completing every step of the production process.” From fabric dyeing, button selection, and the use of natural fibers to his meticulous sewing technique that forgoes interfacing in favor of cotton thread construction, every detail is personally handled by him, demonstrating an exquisite dedication to materials and craftsmanship. He believes the value of a work lies not only in its appearance but also in the sensory experience and the creator’s physical involvement.

During the lecture, Lee emphasized that “design should be approached from multiple perspectives.” By weaving together culture, society, personal experiences, and material characteristics, he encouraged students to break free from formal constraints and return to the essence of creation. He pointed out that clothing is a language that requires no words but can be directly perceived by the body—a unique form of storytelling.

Associate Professor Hsieh noted that Lee’s sharing not only inspired students to deeply reflect on the original intent and essence of design but also provided valuable frontline practical insights and opportunities for critical thinking. The entire lecture was engaging and interactive, opening an important gateway for design students toward the spirit of craftsmanship and sustainable practice.

The 2025 TISDC competition is open for submissions from May 12 to July 7. Interested students are warmly encouraged to participate!

On May 15, the 2025 TISDC campus promotion tour arrived at Asia University.

This session featured a special lecture by Ting-Han Lin, Co-Founder ofReturn Design and Chairperson of TPadd(台北設計與藝術指導協會). Titled “Finding Your Unique Position – The Diverse Roles and Impact of Design”, the talk invited students to explore the meaning, possibilities, and influence of design in today’s world. Lin also shared his views on sustainability and offered valuable insights drawn from his own design career.

The event was hosted by Assistant Professor Lin Meng-Chieh, Co-Project Leader of TISDC, who introduced the 2025 TISDC theme, DIVERSITY, along with key submission details and examples from previous years. She encouraged students to use design as a means to express diverse and creative ideas.

When discussing sustainable design, Ting-Han Lin stated, “I believe the core value of sustainability is the ability to develop and operate continuously.” Throughout the lecture, he shared a wide range of design cases — from everyday products and commercial solutions to service design that aims to improve society. He emphasized how design plays different roles and creates impact across various contexts around the world. Lin’s case analyses highlighted the unique values worth learning from, inspiring students to reflect on their creative positioning and the values they hope to communicate through design.

We warmly welcome all interested students to seize this opportunity and join in

Taiwan International Student Design Competition (TISDC), the largest-scale student design competition worldwide, is organized by the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education (Taiwan). This year, TISDC is sponsored by iSee Taiwan Foundation, Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation, and TPCA Environment Foundation and executed by the Department of Visual Communication Design, Asia University. TISDC is now in its seventeenth year. This year’s competition theme, “Equality,” encouraged students to advocate for equal respect and treatment through design, fostering a society that embraces diversity and harmony. This year, TISDC received 19,667 entries from 1,138 schools/departments in 64 countries/regions. The number of participating entries showcased a notable scale.

The physical final selection event took place on October 8, 2024, at the multi-showcase exhibition hall in Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in Taipei. Professional jurors from four categories—Product Design, Visual Design, Digital Animation, and Manufacturer Designated—were present, including 6 conveners from Taiwan and 21 representatives from international design organizations. These included Kevin Swanepoel from The One Club for Creativity / ADC Awards(ADC), Piotr Swiatek from Bureau of European Design Associations (BEDA), Pidhit Virankabutra from Creative Economy Agency (CEA) of Thailand, Aken Ke from Chinese Industrial Design Association (CIDA),Pradyumna Vyas from Confederation of Indian Industry (CII),Jason Frazier from Colorado International Invitational Poster Exhibition (CIIPE), Teresa Franquerira from Cumulus Global Association of Art and Design Education and Research, Leeyau Chun Chuan from Design Business Chamber Singapore (DBCS), Hung Keung from Hong Kong Federation of Design and Creative Industries (FHKDCI),Andrew Simpson from Good Design Australia (GDA),Stefan Anderl from German Design Council (GDC), Prananda Luffiansyah Malasan from Indonesia Design Development Center (IDDC), Ivette Valenzuela from International Poster Biennial in Mexico (IPBM), Norito Shinmura from Japan Graphic Design Association (JAGDA), Hisakazu Shimizu frrom Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP), Jeong Hyun Ra from Korea Ensemble of Contemporary Design (KECD), Sio Leong Chao from Macau Designers Association (MDA), Debbie Gan from Malaysia Design Archive (MDA), David Appiah from Pan-Afrikan Design Institute (PADI),Kelley Cheng from The Design Alliance Asia (tDA Asia), and Tony Chang from World Design Organization® (WDO), forming a prestigious panel of 27 judges from across five continents.

The selection of works was attentive in presenting the meaning of the theme “Equality” by the jury panel. This allows the judges to see more diversity in students’creativities. Through this event, has not only increased international exchange but has also allowed us to see different perspectives and viewpoints. We believe it has also allowed international judges to see Taiwan’s emphasis on design once again.
