The Good Design Australia is now officially calling for entries for the 2018 Good Design Awards across 10 main design disciplines. Entries will close on 9 March 2018

This year will be a special year for the Good Design Awards as it will be celebrating their 60th anniversary. For the first time ever the Good Design Awards Ceremony will be held at the Sydney Opera House on Thurs 17 May 2018 and will be followed by the Good Design Showcase Exhibition in Sydney Harbour from Fri 25 to Sun 27 May

Winners of the Awards will be featured in the all-new Good Design Index, an online showcase of the best in design and innovation in Australia and around the world. Winners will also be showcased in the 3-day Good Design Showcase Exhibition in the heart of Sydney Harbour, among other benefits.  

Good Design Australia is also pleased to announce that the Application form can now be viewed in Chinese.

Brave to Break Through, Intent on Innovation

The overseas publicity of the first stop of “2018 Taiwan International Student Design Competition” started! The Project Director of TISDC Taiwan International Student Design Competition & Chair Professor at Asia University, Pang Soong Lin and Shin-Fu Lee were leading the executive team to Coimbatore, India, for a 9-day publicity from February 28 to March 8. It is the first time that TISDC came to India since it was established in 2008! The overseas promotional activity started with presenting 2017 TISDC awarded works in India. With special thanks to Mr. Ashish Deshpande’s assistance, TISDC visited DJ Academy of Design in Coimbatore on March 1 to promote the exhibition and met the school Founder Dean Mr. Singanapalli Balaram. The executive team hoped to encourage Indian students to participate the competition and to invigorate different elements of creativity for designing art in India.

India Design Council, the partner of TISDC, has been assisting to hold overseas exhibition of TISDC for years. This year, TISDC exhibition will be held at India Design Week exhibition on March 3rd to 4th to present the 2017 TISDC awarded works. The exhibition includes a total of three major international design competitions: I-Mark / India Design Mark, G-Mark / JDP Good Design Award and TISDC / Taiwan International Student Design Competition. India Design Mark also invites the Project Director Apex Lin, Pang Soong to attend as a commentator at the remarkable competition in India- India Design Mark 2018. TISDC especially thanks to the supportive members, Mr. Hrridaysh Deshpande, the advisor from India Design Council, and Mr. Pradyumna Vyas, the Director of National Institute of Design, to help executive team of TISDC conduct promotional activities in local design institutes in India. Moreover, they also encourage local students to keep paying attention to the competition and guide more outstanding students to take the opportunity to connect with the world. This year, the India Design Council will also continue to be involved in the 2018 International Design Association Special Prize and establish a solid partnership with TISDC.

With the assistance of the TISDC’s partner, India Design Council, the overseas touring design exhibition of 2018 started at the India Design Week in Coimbatore, March 3rd – March 4th. TISDC’s Project Director, Professor Pang Soong Lin was leading the executive team to India for publicity. The team went to Delhi and visited Indian Institute of Art and Design (IIAD) on March 5th.

The Indian Institute of Art and Design is an educational institute in partnership with Kingston University in London. It was such an honor having IIAD’s Head Administration Simrat Joshi, Dean for Outreach and Corporate Relations Anubha Kakroo and other faculties to attend the meeting. The meeting was briefed by Professor Lin and the executive team to introduce the theme and the planning of 2018 Taiwan International Student Design Competition, including the achievements over the past years and the future development. TISDC aims at establishing a long-term and strong partnership with the Indian Institute of Art and Design.

The Project Director of TISDC Taiwan International Student Design Competition & Chair Professor of Asia University, Pang Soong Lin and Shin-Fu Lee were leading the executive team to Coimbatore and Delhi, India, for a 9-day publicity from February 28 to March 8. On March 5th, TISDC executive team visited the Department of Industrial Design, the School of Planning and Architecture, which was the second stop of promotions in Delhi, for 2018 overseas touring design exhibition. A total of about 55 students and 5 teachers attended the meeting. Special thanks to Mr. Bindoo from National Institute of Design for accompanying the executive team through the whole time in Delhi.

School of Planning and Architecture is a specialized University, which exclusively provides training at various levels, in different aspects of human habitat and environment. During the meeting, the executive team briefed the spirit of Taiwan International Student Design Competition, and encouraged outstanding students from the school to take the chance to connect with international creative design by participating in the competition.

The TISDC executive team conducted a 2018 competition promotion to the Indian National Institute of Design’s office in Delhi on March 5th. The team met with the professors from the Indian Institute of Craft Design(Prof. Bhargav Mistry) and Sushant School of Design Ansal University(Prof. Manika Walia). Special thanks to India Design Council (IDC) for the warm arrangements and being supportive for our promotion.

The National Institute of Design (NID) is one of the most internationally recognized institutes in the field of design education and research. The TISDC executive team on the one hand established ties of India’s local educational institutes with international visibility, and highlights TISDC’s importance on the other. The overseas touring also laid the solid foundation for the future cooperation.

For the purpose of promoting 2018 Taiwan International Student Design Competition, the executive team started a publicity tour to India from Feb. 28th to March 8th. The team visited DJ Academy of Design in Coimbatore on March 1st, attended India Design Week, which displayed 2017 awarded works of TISDC, from March 3rd to March 4th, and then went to Delhi on March 5th to visited Indian Institute of Art and Design (IIAD), School of Planning and Architecture, Indian National Institute of Design’s office located in Delhi. The team visited the last stop, Pearl Academy on March 7th. Pearl Academy has been awarded as Best Design Institute in India for two consecutive years (2016 & 2017) by ASSOCHAM. Special thanks for Professor Urvi Khanna’s hospitality and teachers of the school who attended the meeting discussed with team members passionately. The overseas promotion in India definitely established the first step to success for 2018 TISDC.

Organized by Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, executed by Asia University, 2018 Taiwan International Student Design Competition (TISDC) is entering its 11th year since 2008. On March 9th , the executive team invited professors and teachers in Taiwan to join the TISDC professional meeting. The theme of 2018 TISDC is “Breakthrough and Innovation”. With participants from global students, TISDC brings new design energy to Taiwan, as well as to the world. Director Apex Lin encourages more and more worldwide students to participate in this competition. In 2017, there were up to 18,000 registered works participated by total 71 countries. The indicator shows that Taiwan International Student Design Competition is now one of the biggest student design competitions in the world.

As the New Southbound Policy going since 2017, the executive team of Taiwan International Student Design Competition expanded its international promotion journey to Southeast Asia to encourage art students to participate in the contest. Moreover, it is expected that the “New Southbound Design Creative Talent Project” will be held this year. Through workshops and lectures which would be conducted in Southeast Asia, the outstanding design talents of Taiwan will reach the global stage, and a mutual exchange platform will be established. The service design category is new for the competition this year, and the definition of service design was well explained in the meeting, so that innovative and creative thinking could be accomplished in the competition.

Thanks to the discussion of Taiwanese professionals, we look forward to recruiting more works this year and creating a new milestone for 2018 TISDC.

On 28th March, Wednesday, the associate project director of TISDC, Professor Melvyn Liao, conducted a hurried promotion journey without stop; the second stop was the National Taiwan Normal University. The contents of the promotion focused on detailed introducing the rules and the previous sessions of the competition. The awarded works were shared to increase students' willingness to participate in the competition and to stimulate students' creative ideas. On 10th April, Tuesday, the associate project director of TISDC, Prof. Shin Fu Lee, was honored to go to Ta-Ming Senior High School to promote the theme "Breakthrough and Innovation" for 2018 TISDC. This event invited approximately 130 students to attend, and most of them were second-year  students at Department of Advertisement. Prof. Shin Fu Lee shared his experience of directing students to participate in international competitions. The students were attracted to his speech and listened to him intently. Prof. Lee not only encouraged students to participate in the competition and compete for high prize money, he also boosted students to accumulate their creative energy in a solid manner by participating in international competitions. He hoped that one day, the students could be able to bravely break through and be creative! Over 50 students attended the event, Prof. Yu shared his experience in design process to encourage students to enhance their professional skills and elevate their ability of having keen insight into matters; meanwhile, he also encouraged students to participate in the competition to accumulate their creative energy. Special thanks to the Prof. Hsiao Wei Fang from Arts and Crafts Department and teachers from other departments, for the assistance and support for 2018 TISDC promotional tour at Tung Fang Design University.

Taiwan design shines in Vietnam!

 

To cooperate with the Ministry of Education's Southbound Policy, Professor Jun-Hong Chen, Professor Shin-Fu Lee, and Professor Sheng-Min Hsieh, Asia University, were leading the TISDC executive team to travel to Vietnam for promotion tour at artistic design schools in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City from April 17th to April 23rd, 2018. The relevant schools were conducting a one-week exchange activity named "Vietnam Taiwan Design Education Talk" holding at the Nikko Hotel in Hanoi on April 18th. During the talk, the outstanding 2017 prize-winning works would be showcased at the same time. The team would like to thank Pham Huyen Kieu, the head of the HAKI design company, which  hosts the British Council Education Fair in Vietnam, for the assistance of gathering five art and design institutes in Hanoi: Vietnam University of Fine Arts, FPT University (FPT), University of Industrial Fine Art, Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology, Nguyen Trai University, and representatives of local famous designers and design organizations. Over 30 experts and scholars attended to the lecture. The forum also invited Li Ming, the head of Education Division, Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in Hanoi, Vietnam, to participate in the event.

 

At the beginning of the forum, Mr. Li Ming took the theme of “breakthroughs and innovation” to encourage Vietnamese students to challenge themselves and practice their creative ideas through participating international competitions, furthermore, to build more educational and cultural exchanges between Taiwan and Vietnam. The associate project director of TISDC, Prof. Jun-Hong Chen, introduced the relevant programs for the cultivation of art and design talents currently handled by the Ministry of Education of Taiwan, and presented the substantial achievement of Taiwan’s design education. Meanwhile, he expressed his sincere appreciation to the chief executives and local school representatives for their support and assistance to this event by presenting certificate of appreciation to them. The associate project director of TISDC, Prof. Shin-Fu Lee, lectured on the theme “Breakthrough and Innovation” to encourage Vietnamese students to participate actively in international competitions to accumulate their own creative energy. He hoped that the students will have the courage to break through and be innovative in the design field. Prof. Tian Thi Le Quyen from FPT, shared the experience of leading the students to participate in the competition last year. The expectation of the number of participants in Vietnam could reach a new high this year to gain a better achievement, and create the strength to connect with international design energy.

 

This forum once again opened the window for design education exchanges and has built a solid friendship between Vietnam and Taiwan since the first time that the executive team launched promotional activities in Vietnam in 2017. Through exchange activities, local students and teachers would also keep a close attention to the development of TISDC.

The TISDC executive team were led by Prof. Jun-Hong Chen, Professor Shin-Fu Lee, and Prof Sheng-min Hsieh conducting a one-week exchange activities in Hanoi, Vietnam, in response to the Southbound Policy promoted by Ministry of Education, Taiwan. The promotional tour invited schools related to art and design in Ho Chi Minh City to participate in the activities from 17th April to 23rd April, 2018. Not only did TISDC team cooperate with the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology to hold a two-day workshop on 19thApril and 20thApril, an exhibition of 2017 TISDC winners’ works was also taken place during the workshop. On 19thApril, the workshop warmed up with a forum in the morning with 90 teachers and students attended, lectured by Prof. Jun-Hong Chen and Prof Sheng-Min Hsieh to introduce the series of programs for the cultivation of art and design talents handled by the Ministry of Education of Taiwan, and the Prof. Shin-Fu Lee took the theme "Breakthrough and Innovation" to encourage the students to participate in the competition. The workshop officially opened in the afternoon. The workshop invited four well-known art and design related institutions in Hanoi, which were Hanoi College of Art, Nguyen Trai University, Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology, and FTP University, a total of 52 students attended. The workshop instructors were selected by the Taiwanese International Student Design Competition in 2018 through an open selection for three outstanding Taiwanese design talent: Sheng-Hong Lee, whose expertise is industrial design, currently works as an associate professor at Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts at Fudan University; Fu-Chun Wan, who has won the German Red Dot Communication Design Award, the German iF Concept Design Award, etc. mainly in industrial design; and Pu Chen, the Gold prize for animation of WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival. Led by the abovementioned cutting-edges designers, the workshop was aimed at inspiring students with creative practice on their works through the exchange activities.

The three designers shared their own experience to the students with different perspectives. Lecturer Sheng-Hong Lee started from the illusion of the future to remind students searching for the neglected miner details, and explore the relationship between those materials and human, to further combined them into their works with the spirit of innovation and breakthrough. And Fu-Chun Wan shared her thoughts on multiple design products that received the overseas certification awards, and shared her experiences in participating in international contests. She emphasized that “Design is based on the way to understand the nature of things elegantly.” Pu Chen shared his works which were created during his study based on graphic and multimedia design to encourage students to try multi-media forms more on their works. During the workshop, the students were devoted by the leading of three Instructors which provided observations and reflections in different design fields through creative ideas and interpretations. TISDC team looked forward to bringing more international perspectives for Vietnamese design students.

On 18th April, Wednesday, the associate project director of TISDC, Prof. Yu Minlung ,headed to Cheng Shiu University to promote the theme "Breakthrough and Innovation" for 2018 TISDC. Special thanks to the Director of Dep. Of Modern Living and Creative Design, Prof. Shou-Zhe Wu, and Prof. Yue-Xing Lai, for being greatly supportive and assistance. Prof. Yu shared his experience in directing students to participate in international competitions to the attendees through his brilliant analysis. Meanwhile, Prof. Yu shared awarded works to encourage students taking the theme of this year “ Breakthrough and Innovation” to set high standers for themselves and to enhance their professional skills, to win gold prize for creativity.

The introduction of the competition is as bellow:

1. The total prize money is up to NT$5.3 million

2. The largest student design contest in the world

3. 21 international design organizations authorized to set up awards

4. No registration fee and entry fee

On 19th April, Thursday, the associate project director of TISDC, Prof. Yu Minlung was honored to go to China University of Technology to promote the theme "Breakthrough and Innovation" for 2018 TISDC. Prof. Yu has the reputation of “Coach Gold Prize” in directing students to participate in design competitions. During the promotion, he shared his experience in poster designs, and took the theme of this year “ Breakthrough and Innovation” to encourage students to elevate their professional skills. Furthermore, he would personally give advice and analysis to students to achieve efficient exchange between teachers and students through his experience. Special thanks to the Director of Dep. Of Visual Communication and Design, Prof. Bo-Wun Wu, Prof. Sheng-Quan Zhang, Prof. Rong-Shun Huang, Prof. Fa-Siang Hu, and the students from China University of Technology, for being greatly supportive and assistance.
