MIT AgeLab

The MIT AgeLab is an interdisciplinary research center within the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Founded in 1999, it collaborates with industry, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations to improve the quality of life for older adults and their caregivers.

Its research approach is grounded in consumer-centered systems thinking, exploring the opportunities and challenges of a “longevity society” and the emerging lifestyles of new generations in order to drive cross-market innovation.

Among AgeLab’s innovative tools, one of the most well-known is AGNES (Age Gain Now Empathy System)—a suit composed of elastic bands, weights, and other components that simulates the physical conditions associated with aging. It recreates limitations related to mobility, balance, vision, and dexterity, helping designers, engineers, policymakers, and others better understand the everyday physical experiences of older adults, ultimately enabling the creation of more age-friendly products and services.
