The aim was to capture tension in motion through the umbrella,an object of understated elegance and functionality. Drawing inspiration from the blooming of the Dianthus flower,I turned to origami to capture the swirling tension into a mechanism. Based on the design of satellite panels and after much experimentation and prototyping,the final design brings a fresh perspective to this everyday contraption through its mesmerising unfolding and twisting motion,igniting a childlike wonder and joy.
