Nanfang’ao was once the world’s most densely populated fishing port, where fishing shaped both industry and everyday life. Today, modern logistics have separated production from the public realm, leaving the harbor as a place to pass through rather than stay. This project creates a place to pause, reconnecting people with the sea and the rhythms of the port. Located between Nantian Temple, the seafood market, and the waterfront, the pavilion is inspired by traditional set-net fishing. Its roof rises and falls with the tides through a counterweight and buoy system, making the harbor’s invisible rhythms visible. As the marble counterweight gradually erodes, it is eventually returned to the sea as an anchor for set-net fishing, where it also becomes a substrate for coral growth. Rather than pursuing efficiency, the project celebrates patience, material cycles, and a resilient relationship between people, the harbor, and nature.
