In snowy regions like Hokkaido, winter snow is both a valuable tourism resource and a seasonal challenge, often reducing visitor numbers as outdoor activities become limited. Lake Shikotsu reflects this issue. Despite its crystal-clear lake and rich natural environment, its tourism experience remains highly dependent on weather conditions. This project reinterprets rain and snow as opportunities rather than obstacles. Continuous slopes following the topography and varied roof forms choreograph the movement and accumulation of rain and snow, transforming weather into spatial experiences. Climate-responsive materials reveal seasonal changes and invite visitors to engage with nature. Beneath the courtyard, a snow storage chamber preserves winter snow for summer cooling, improving environmental performance. By embracing climate as an integral part of architecture, the project restores the connection between people and nature while enhancing Lake Shikotsu’s year-round tourism resilience.
