Organized by the Ministry of Education (Taiwan), sponsored by iSee Taiwan Foundation, Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation, and TPCA Environment Foundation, and is executed by Asia University., Taiwan International Student Design Competition is now in its thirteenth year. The theme of this year’s competition is “Action.” This year, the Competition attracted 20,377 entries from 860 schools and departments in 64 countries/regions around 5 continents, which is still a high record of submissions received.

The Preliminary Selection in Taiwan of 2020TISDC took place on August 29th and August 30th at Taipei New Horizon. 40 experts in design from Taiwan, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, United States of America, United Kingdom, and Germany were invited to form the panels of jurors for Product Design Category, Visual Design Category and Digital Animation Category. Owing to the great amount of entries the Competition received, it took the jurors two days to finish screening all the entries. After rounds of strict and enthusiastic screening and discussion, 590 entries were eventually on the shortlist, which included works from Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Korea, India, USA, Canada, Brazil, Russia, United Kingdom, Poland, Denmark, Germany, United Arab Emirates, and Newzealand. These finalists will pursue the Grand Prix, which is worth NT$400,000, and the other awards in each category in the Final Selection.

Regarding the entries that became the finalists, the conveners of the three categories, including Mr. Wei-Shen Yi and Mr. Wei-Tang Feng for Product Design Category, Mr. Chun-Cheng Chou and Mr. Ben Wang for Visual Design Category, and Mr. Hsun-Chun Chuang and Mr. Po-Chou Chi for Digital Animation Category, all agreed that “Action,” the theme of this year’s competition, is the concept to respond to “SDGs: Sustainable Development Goals,” which were advocated by the UN. This theme will then serve to remind students worldwide that in order to prevent disasters from happening, immediate actions must be taken, and that they can use design to resolve global sustainable development issues and thus amply fulfill their responsibilities as global citizens. Thus, they saw many participants demonstrate the relationship between humans and the environment in their selected works. This indicated that young participants did pay attention to this international social issue and tried to express their thoughts and find a way to solve problems in their entries, which impressed the jurors a lot.

The shortlist will be announced and posted on the official website of 2020TISDC in the next two weeks. Following the Preliminary Selection in Taiwan, 2020TISDC is going to hold the Online Final Selection from September 21st to October 30th. 6 domestic and 39 international designers  will form the panels of jurors to demonstrate the diversity and credibility of TISDC and come out with the winners of this year’s competition. On September 26th (Sat.), TISDC will hold an International Design Masters Lecture Series in Huashan 1914 Creative Park M4A 2F-Sake Factory, inviting international design masters to give a talk and share their design experiences with the audience. On October 16th (Fri.), TISDC will hold an International Design Masters Lecture Series in the National Library of Public Information in Taichung, and will invite three design masters to be the lecturer for New Asia Design Workshop on October 17th to 18th. Those who are interested in design shouldn’t miss the golden opportunity to have exciting discussions  with international masters. To know more about 2020 TISDC, visit https://www.tisdc.org/.

Organized by the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education (Taiwan), executed by the Department of Visual Communication Design of Asia University, and sponsored by iSee Taiwan Foundation, Sayling Wen Cultural and Educational Foundation, TPCA Environment Foundation, 2020 Taiwan International Student Design Competition held the 4th New Asia Design Workshop at Asia University on 17th and 18th of October, 2020. The workshop intends to encourage students in cultural exchange and build up Taiwan Design’s international status and image. Three prestigious international designers including Mr. Gideon Loewy from Denmark, Mr. Felix von Bomhard from Germany, and Mr. Gerard Jasperse from Netherlands were invited to be the instructors of the workshop, and with the cooperating teacher Assistant Prof. Hung-Wen Hsu, Assistant Prof. Hsiao-Pei Hou and Associate Prof. Jia-An Lin, the event was rounded off successfully.

The New Asia Design Workshop targeted at the theme of “Action” of 2020 Taiwan International Student Design Competition. The international instructors led the students to think, observe and experience creatively. Not only could it broaden their horizon but also gain more inspiration to finish their work with different concepts. To break the language barrier between lecturers and students, each lecturer was accompanied by an interpreter so that students could understand what the lecturers wanted to express immediately and correctly and thus get more involved in the Workshop. The Workshop boosted international exchange and provide students who are interested in design with an opportunity to learn from international design experts face to face. There are around 90 students from 14 universities and departments in Taiwan attended the Workshop.

After the two-day workshop, students got inspired by the experienced designers and had came out with new thoughts and new design energy. Some students also mentioned that it was such a pity that the workshop only lasted for two days and hoped they could have more time to learn from the instructors. At the same time, the instructors were deeply touched by the student’s devotion to the workshop and were all impressed by the works which the students produced in such a short period of time. Students have also made friends from different fields with the same interest, experienced team work and brain storming which gave them an unforgettable experience.

The 2020 Taiwan International Student Design Competition (TISDC) was organized by the Ministry of Education, and sponsored by iSee Taiwan Foundation, and the Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation. The award ceremony will be held in the afternoon on November 24, 2020 at the Theater on the 2nd floor of Ximen Red House. During this year, the TISDC has received 20,377 works, and students from 64 countries/regions, 860 universities, colleges and departments were attracted to participate in this competition. The Grand Prix, the three categories of Gold Prize, Silver Prize, Bronze Prize, and Honorable Mention, the International Design Association Special Award, and the Environmental Sustainability Award sponsored by the TPCA Environment Foundation were all selected after the rigorous preliminary and final selection, and a total of 75 works stood out from all the participants. Among these winning works, 39 works are from students in Taiwan. Furthermore, the Gold Prize in three categories of ‘Product Design’, Visual Design’, and ‘Digital Animation’ were also from Taiwan; this demonstrated that students in Taiwan are not only equipped with abundant design energy, but also have the ability to compete with the works from international students.

This is the 13th year of the TISDC, and there were plenty of participating works. The theme of this year was ‘Action’, which connected with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promoted by the United Nations. Through these designs, concepts such as respect between people, as well as between humans and the environment, introspection and listening to justice and fairness as well as empathy can all be demonstrated. In addition, all the winning works were mature and remarkable.

The most high-profile Grand Prix this year was awarded to Strawberry Candy by Nianze Li from the Tokyo University of Arts. Combining the topic of ‘Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions’ in the SDGs, it reflected that current society is still generally afraid of authority, afraid to speak out and indifferent to children’s rights and interests. This work contrasted the dark reality with an introverted and childlike style of painting, and the image of ‘hands’ constantly appeared in the animation, which cruelly exposes the darkness in gentle brushstrokes. The remarkable technique impressed the juries. It was a rare outstanding student work of recent years, which won the favor of most juries and won a prize of NT$ 400,000 for this student.

The Gold Prize winner in the ‘Product Design’ was HanDo Prosthetics for Kids by Feng-Jia Zheng, Kai-Jung Peng, Hsun-Ye Li, Wei-Ming Kok, Jui-Ling Lin, Yong-Qi Li, Yu-Kuan Mo, and Zhung-Kai Zheng from the Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, which combined the topics of ‘Good Health and Well-Being’, and ‘Responsible Consumption and Production’ in the SDGs. This work was a prosthetic specifically designed for unilateral children amputees aged between 6 to 12 years old. Its modular design can effectively and economically solve individual needs, and connect with different scenarios. In addition, the designers focused on both aesthetics and practicality to bring confidence and a feeling of positivity to the children in the process of growth and learning.

The Gold Prize winner in the ‘Visual Design’ was Numbers of Tainan Coast by Chic-Ying Ho, Xin-Jie Xie, Zhi-Yin Lu, Ting-Yi Huang, Yi-Hsuan Tseng, Yu-Cheng Lin from Ling Tung University. This work delivered the spirit of the topic of ‘Sustainable Cities and Communities’ in the SDGs, applying and extending features of the sand bar, Kun-shen, which is a unique landform in Taiwan into various design pieces. In addition, this work also combined with the films and special issues, the stories of each Kun-shen were recorded, and the brand of Numbers of Tainan Coast was introduced into local places, thereby stimulating the development of regional culture and ethnic groups.

The Gold Prize winner in the ‘Digital Animation’ was A Fish on My Bed by Hsin-Yu Chang, Pei-Yi Lin, Jia-Shan Shu, Chun-Ting Ou, Yun-Fei Liu, Qing Zhuang from the National Taipei University of Business. Their work is a visual presentation of menstruation. Menstruation is a normal physiological phenomenon, but for women it is often perceived as an embarrassing monthly ritual. Through the beautiful red goldfish/menstrual blood, the beauty of conflict with the female protagonist is created, and the story ends with the contrast of love and hate of red goldfish, which resonates with the topic of ‘Gender Equality’ in the SDGs.

TISDC was first held in 2008 and it has now entered its 13th year. The team has endeavored to extend global partnership since the beginning and TISDC now has 22 international design organizations joining the event. We truly appreciate the effort of all the organizations. They not only appoint professional designers as representatives but design and make their own certifications for special prize category. Moreover, students received videos containing comments from representativeness. In short, international organizations not only provide professional advises but also offer great encouragement to the students.

This year’s competition is now wrapping up and will soon come to an end. We appreciate all the domestic and international jurors who had joined us in preliminary and final selection. Only with professional help from jurors and meticulous selection process can the competition offer transparent statistics and impartial results. COVID-19 has a huge impact on daily life and this event is no exception. Designers and experts from abroad weren’t able to join the venue in person. However, they still recorded  comments to offer advises for design students.
