Organized by Ministry of Education (Taiwan), sponsored by iSee Taiwan Foundation, Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation, and Industrial Technology Research Institute, and executed by Asia University, Taiwan International Student Design Competition is now in its twelfth year. The theme of this year’s competition is “Empathy.” This year, the Competition attracted 21,988 entries from 810 schools and departments in 66 countries/regions around 5 continents, which had an all time high record of submissions received.

The Preliminary Selection in Taiwan of 2019 TISDC took place on August 31st and September 1st at Taiwan New Horizon. 24 experts in design from Taiwan, Macau, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, India, and Korea were invited to form the panels of jurors for Product Design Category, Visual Design Category and Digital Animation Category. Owing to the great amount of entries the Competition received, it took the jurors two days to finish screening all the entries. After rounds of strict and enthusiastic screening and discussion, 523 entries were eventually on the shortlist, which included works from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, Korea, the USA, Canada, Turkey, Iran, United Kingdom, Poland, Finland, Sweden, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Netherlands, and Russia. These finalists will pursue the Grand Prix, which is worth NT$400,000, and the other awards in each category in the Final Selection.

Regarding the entries that became the finalists, the conveners of the three categories, including Mr. Lance Han for Product Design Category, Mr. Chia-Chang Yang for Visual Design Category, and Mr. Muh Chen for Digital Animation Category, all agreed that“Empathy,”the theme of this year’s competition, is a concept rooted in affective commitment. Thus, they saw many participants demonstrate the relationship among people and the relationship between human and the environment in their selected works. This indicated that young participants did pay attention to this international social issue and tried to express their thoughts and find a way to solve problems in their entries, which impressed the jurors a lot.

The shortlist will be announced and posted on the official website of 2019 TISDC this week. Following the Preliminary Selection in Taiwan, 2019 TISDC is going to hold the Final Selection on October 24th at the Multi-Showcase Exhibition Hall of Songshan Cultural and Creative Park. 10 domestic designers and 26 international ones will form the panels of jurors to demonstrate the diversity and credibility of TISDC and come out with the winners of this year’s competition. On October 25th, TISDC will hold an International Design Masters Lecture Series, inviting international design masters to give a talk and share their design experiences with the audience. For those who are interested in design shouldn’t miss the golden opportunity to have design exchange with international masters. To know more about 2019 TISDC, visit https://www.tisdc.org/.

The International Design Masters Lecture Series held by Taiwan International Student Design Comeptition was rounded off on October 25. The lecture series took place at 11 different places, including Taipei New Horizon, National Library of Public Information, and 9 design high schools and universities in Nothern, Central, and Southern Taiwan.

As for the International Design Masters Lecture Series in Taipei, TISDC invited design masters from Japan, Denmark, Australia, and Germany to be the speakers, including Mr. Kimitaka Kato, executive director & CDO of Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP), Designer Thomas Bef Flygenring, designer of The LEGO Group, Denmark, Prof. Troy Innocent, founder and director of Urban Play Lab, and Mr. Jenz Großhans, co-founder of Design Studio-Großhans Und Arsad.

The central theme of this year’s International Design Masters Lecture Series is “Empathy,” which is also the theme of this year’s TISDC. Designer Thomas Bef Flygenring shared his experiences in being the designer at Design without Borders Uganda. When he was in Uganda, he not only discovered the needs of people there but also designed tools that could improve their daily lives. Prof. Troy Innocent led the audience to explore his city by integrating design with technology and self-learning, hoping that people could pay more attention to the places they are living. Mr. Kimitaka Kato is an experienced judge in many international design competitions. During his lecture, he shared the winning works of this year’s Good Design Award (Japan), which also strongly related to the issue of “Empathy.” By sharing their experiences in design, the speakers inspired the audience to think more about how designs influence people than to just focus on the designs themselves. In the Q&A session, the audience also seized the great opportunity to learn from the speakers and have design exchange.

Thanks again for all the audience’s attendance and enthusiastic participation. Only with your great support could TISDC made the lecture series so successfully.

The 2019 Taiwan International Student Design Competition, now in its 12th year, is the largest-scale international student design contest in the world. It’s organized by the Ministry of Education and sponsored by iSee Taiwan Foundation, the Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation, and the Industrial Technology Research Institute. The theme this year was Empathy and the competition attracted 21,988 works by students at 810 design schools, located in 66 different countries or regions to compete for prizes in four categories: Product Design, Visual Design, Digital Animation, and Brand Specified.

The preliminary selections were held in Singapore and in Taiwan, and 612 entries were shortlisted for the final round. A jury panel with members from 20 countries or regions then selected the 74 award-winning entries, among which 32 are entries by Taiwanese students.

The awards comprise: · the grand prix, sponsored by the Ministry of Education; the international design association special prizes; · the gold, silver, and three bronze prizes in each of the categories Product Design, Visual Design, and Digital Animation; · 25 honorable mentions, and 22 international design association special prizes, distributed to entries in these three categories. There were also · a gold, a silver, three bronzes, and six honorable mentions for the newly established ITRI Innovation Award (Brand Specified), set up by the Industrial Technology Research Institute.

This year’s grand prix winners are Zi Fong Yong and Ng Ai Ling from National University of Singapore. Their winning entry, The Dyslexperience, is a book design that fully embodies a spirit of empathy and sheds light on the general indifference of the public towards people who have dyslexia. Enhanced images were projected onto a physical book to give readers an experience that makes them realize the daily challenges that dyslexics face, and thereby empathize with people who have this disorder. This entry received acclaim from the majority of the jurors and won its creators the grand prix prize of NTD$ 400,000.

The major prize winning entries are all mature and fascinating works that stood out among the enormous number submitted. Two of the four gold-prize winning entries were designed and created by students from Singapore and Japan respectively, and the other two gold-prize winning entries were designed and created by students from Taiwan.

The gold-prize winner in the Product Design category is Winny Widodo from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore, for her work titled NODE Furniture Series. This series of furniture pieces—inspired by children’s rocking horses and the elderly people’s rocking chairs—crosses generations, allowing children and the elderly to use it together. Winny has created fine, space-saving furniture that is different from conventional designs.

The gold-prize winner in the Visual Design category is Fumio Kajitani from Tokyo University of the Arts, for the entry titled Forms of Love. Its concept is that everyone has their own experience and interpretation of love. The designer invited more than 200 people to participate in the creating of this piece by reflecting on themselves and their feelings about love, and different profiles and portraits of love are integrated into the design.

The gold prize in the Digital Animation category is shared by Ho Yun-Zhen, Liu Ya-Ching, and Hsueh Fang-Yi from National Taiwan University of Arts. Their work, The Sea Within The Room, addresses the issue of sexual assault and depicts the “freezing behavior” of victims during such incidents. In the animated story, the protagonist witnesses as the assault on her is occurring yet, out of fear, she cannot control her body and resist. The highly restrained method and style of the storytelling won acclaim from the jurors.

The gold prize in the Brand Specified category is shared by Chen Zhi-Fan from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology and Hu Hui-Ping and Chang Wei-Chun from Ming Chi University of Technology. Their entry, AI Oculur, is a form of firefighting equipment that integrates sensors into masks and water-jet nozzles. It provides firefighters with an efficient way of firefighting and can largely reduce the risks that firefighters face at work. This highly practical entry won the gold prize in the ITRI Innovation Award (Brand Specified).
