The 2019 Taiwan International Student Design Competition (TISDC), now celebrating its 12th year, is one of the largest-scale international student design contests in the world. It is organized by the Ministry of Education and Asia University, and sponsored by iSee Taiwan Foundation, the Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation, and the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). This year’s competition attracted 21,988 works by students at 810 design schools, located in 66 different countries or regions. After the exhaustive preliminary rounds, the final judging panel with members from 20 countries or regions selected the 74 award-winning entries among which 32 are entries by Taiwanese students.

The theme of this year’s competition was Empathy, in response to the increasing importance of people being in harmony with each other and the environment, especially as we face a rapidly changing world, with an increasing focus on holistic development. Young designers are encouraged to call on their hearts and empathy, as they interpret the relationships between people, and between people and the environment, which have become among a most critical issue in recent years. Many of this year’s winners have clearly conveyed related messages, demonstrating their understanding of and reflections on empathy as well as and the social responsibilities that being a professional designer entails.

The award ceremony for the 2019 Taiwan International Student Design Competition, together with an exhibition of the winning works, will be held on December 6 in the Eslite Performance Hall at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in Taipei City. The public is warmly invited to attend.

Seventy-four (74) winning pieces have been chosen to receive one of the following awards: · the Grand Prix, sponsored by the Ministry of Education; the International Design Association special prizes; · gold, silver, and three bronze prizes in each of the categories Product Design, Visual Design, and Digital Animation; · 25 honorable mentions, and 22 international design association special prizes, distributed to entries in these three categories. There were also · a gold, a silver, three bronzes, and six honorable mentions for the ITRI Technique Innovation Award.

The 2019 Grand Prix went to The Dyslexperience, by Zi Fong Yong and Ng Ai Ling from National University of Singapore. Their winning entry sheds light on the general indifference of the public towards the daily challenges faced by people who have dyslexia. They projected enhanced images onto real books to convey and make viewers realize the kind of sensory experiences dyslexics face, and thereby empathize with them. Their entry fully expresses empathy. It received acclaim from the judges and won its creators the grand prix prize of NTD$ 400,000.

The Gold Prize winners in the four categories are from Singapore, Japan, and Taiwan. The Gold Prize winner in the Product Design category is Winny Widodo from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore. Her work, NODE Furniture Series, is a furniture—inspired by children’s love of rocking horses and elderly people’s love of rocking chairs—is designed for different generations to enjoy using. Winny has created outstanding, space-saving furniture that is quite different from conventional designs.

The Gold Prize winner in the Visual Design category is Fumio Kajitani from Tokyo University of the Arts, for the entry titled Forms of Love. This expresses the concept that different people each have their own different experiences and interpretations of love. More than 200 people participated in the creating of this experiential work, and both its creative concept and the techniques used drew praise from the judges.

The Gold Prize in the Digital Animation category went to The Sea Within The Room, a work by Ho Yun-Zhen, Liu Ya-Ching, and Hsueh Fang-Yi from National Taiwan University of Arts. Their work depicts the story of a sexual assault victim’s “freeze responses”. The victim of an assault was so scared that she went blank and could not react or fight back. The calm, highly restrained, and unexaggerated storytelling style and techniques impressed the judges.

The Gold Prize in the Brand Specified category is shared by Chen Zhi-Fan from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, and Hu Hui-Ping and Chang Wei-Chun from Ming Chi University of Technology. Their entry, AI Oculur, is a form of firefighting equipment that integrates sensors into firefighters’ masks and fire hose nozzles. It enhances firefighting efficiency and at the same time reduces the risks that firefighters face at work. These highly practical features won the designers the gold prize in the ITRI Technique Innovation Award.

The list of all the award winners has been released and it can be viewed on the MOE website (https://depart.moe.edu.tw/ed2200/) and the TISDC (www.tisdc.org) website. The general public is welcome to attend the award ceremony on December 6, and there will also be a further opportunity to enjoy some of the work of these international student designers, at an exhibition of their excellent designs pieces which will be held in the National Library of Public Information in Taichung, from December 3 to December 15.

The Award Ceremony and Exhibition of the Winning Works

The theme of the 2020 Taiwan International Student Design Competition is “Action.”

“Actions speak louder than words,” says Confucius

“I never worry about action, but only about inaction,” states Winston Churchill, former British prime minister.

If “Action” is associated with the “SDGs: Sustainable Development Goals,” which were advocated by the UN in 2015 as goals to be achieved by 2030, this theme will then serve to remind students worldwide that in order to prevent disasters from happening, immediate actions must be taken, and that they can use design to resolve global sustainable development issues and thus amply fulfill their responsibilities as global citizens.

Cumulus is the only global association to serve art and design education and research. It is a forum for partnership and transfer of knowledge and best practices. Cumulus consists currently of 286 members from 57 countries. Founded in 1990 and Operating as an association since 2001. There are 286 members from 57 countries in 2018. The University of Art and Design in Helsinki Finland (UIAH), today as Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, and Royal College of Art in London UK, in co-operation with Danmarks Designskole, Gerrit Rietvelt Academy, Universität Gesamthochschule Essen and Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Wien initiated Cumulus as a network in 1990. Cumulus offers wide international context for discussion and development in education and research of art, design and media.

In December 2019, when Ms. Mariana Amatullo, President of Cumulus, flew to Taiwan to present Cumulus Special Award to the winning student at TISDC’s Award Ceremony, President Mariana Amatullo signed the MoU with Prof. Apex Lin, Project Director of Taiwan International Student Design Competition, for the great job enabling us to continue together passionately for the success of the Talent of the Youth on this Planet. TISDC and Asia University look forward to future collaborations with Cumulus.

President of Cumulus, Ms. Mariana Amatullo signed the MoU between Cumulus and Taiwan International Student Design Competition (Asia University) with Prof. Apex Lin, project director of TISDC.

Led by Taiwan International Student Design Competition’s (TISDC) associate project directors, Prof. Jun-Hong Chen and Prof. Shin-Fu Lee, the execution team of TISDC went to Thailand, to promote 2020 TISDC on February 3rd. Thanks to Creative Economy Agency’s (CEA) continued support and assistance, TISDC gained the precious opportunity to hold the promotional event in Bangkok. TISDC is also honored to invite professors and students from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Rangsit University and Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University and those who are interested in student design competition to join us. Around 45 attendees participated in the promotional event.

The theme of 2020 TISDC is “Action,” a concept derived from the “SDGs: Sustainable Development Goals,” proposed by the United Nations in 2015. These goals address the challenges that human beings are facing when trying to make the world more sustainble. As global citizens, we are expected to achieve these goals by 2030. TISDC’s associate project director, Prof. Shin-Fu Lee, indicated that the key to reaching these goals is taking action immediately. Without action, nothing could be changed. Thus, people should start facing these problems right away, figuring out possible ways to solve problems, and most importantly, using “design” to put thoughts into practice. By choosing “Action” as the theme of 2020 TISDC, TISDC would like to encourage students to pay attention to global issues, look into these issues from different perspectives, and see how design could make the world a better place.

In this promotional event, special thanks are given to CEA’s executive director, Mr. Apisit Laistrooglai, and acting director of Creative City Development, Mr. Pichit Virankabutra, for the strong support. Only with their assistance could TISDC build a connection to Thailand’s central design center to promote the Competition. TISDC’s grateful thanks also go to Mr. Saksiri Koshpasharin, TISDC’s juror of 2019, and Mr. Doonyapol Srichan, TISDC’s juror of 2018, for attending the promotional event to share their experience in selecting works. Therefore, students could have clearer ideas about how to be prepared for the Competition. TISDC also appreciates the attendance of Ms. Lu Hsin-Hui, Central News Agency’s correspondent in Bangkok, and her assistance in helping circulate the information of TISDC in Thailand. Last but not least, it is a great honor of TISDC that professors and students from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Rangsit University, Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University, and other design schools in Thailand joined the promotional event together to know more about the Competition. TISDC hopes that student designers in Thailand could keep following the news on TISDC’s official website and seize the opportunity to make good use of this Competition as a platform to show the world their excellent design works.

First of all, Taiwan International Student Design Competition would like to express its special thanks to Creative Economy Agency (CEA), one of TISDC’s international collaborators, for its continued support and assistance. Thanks to CEA’s arrangement, TISDC could have the opportunity to join Bangkok Design Week 2020 to exhibit its 2019 winning students works. Design weeks held in big cities around the world are often viewed as important platforms for international designers to have exchange and brainstroming together. Therefore, in recent years, TISDC has made good use of this kind of platform, such as Bangkok Design Week 2019 and Chiang Mai Design Week 2018, to show the world the design power of Taiwan and the emphasis Taiwan puts on design field and design education.

These years, Thailand Government and citizens also focus great attention on design field, developing great design power. In 2020, the yearly Bangkok Design Week is carried out from February 1st to February 9th. Thanks to the invitation from CEA’s executive director, Mr. Apisit Laistrooglai, and acting director of Creative City Development, Mr. Pichit Virankabutra, TISDC’s associate project directors, Prof. Jun-Hong Chen and Prof. Shin-Fu Lee, could lead the execution team of TISDC to participate in such a grand international design event. This exhibition in BKKDW2020 not only presents the execellent design works of students to the world but also raises the visibility as well as enhances the internationalization of Taiwan, which are the golas of TISDC.

Ms. Chen, project manager of TISDC, focuesed on the awards of this year’s competition and sharing the winning entries of 2019TISDC with the attendees. Thanks for everyone’s active participation.

The theme of 2020TISDC is “Action,” which encourages design students to take action and look into how design could help people solve problems in our daily life. Thus, “Action” is also related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by the United Nations in 2015. The United Nations aims to make the world a better place for humans to live. The seventh stop of 2020 Taiwan International Student Design Competition’s domestic promotional trip was Fo Guang University. Thanks to the invitation from the Department of Product and Media Design and Prof. Yi-Fang Kao, TISDC could have the opportunity to introduce this year’s competition to the professors and students. Aroud 40 of them joined us together. Ms. Lin, project manager of TISDC, not only let the attendees know the achievements that TISDC had reached so far but also introduce this year’s competition regulations and some of the winning entries of 2019TISDC to them. Ms. Lin encouraged the students to brainstorm frequently and try to put their thoughts into practice as well in order to show the world their creativity and uniqueness. TISDC is a great platform for design students to be connected to the world.

The theme of 2020TISDC is “Action.” Since action speaks louder than words, we hope that students could pay attention to the existing issues in our daily life and take action right away to use design to make the world a better place to live. The theme “Action” is also connected to the Sustaainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by the United Nations in 2015  as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.  Thus, we encourage students to make the best use of design to change the world for better.

This year, 2020TISDC has a newly-established award, called Environmental Sustainability Award, sponsored by TPCA Environment Foundation. The Foundation hopes that designers could always keep in mind the importance of protecting our environment. Thus, jurors will select one entry from the product design category with the significance of environmental sustainability to win this prize. The winner of this prize could receive NT$100,000, a trophy, and a certificate. It’s a gold opportunity that design students shouldn’t miss.

In the end, 2020TISDC would like to express our appreciation to Fo Guang University again for inviting us and helping us arrange this promotional campaign. We really look forward to the active participation of students from Fo Guang University.
