Since 2015 the Taiwan International Design Competition (TISDC), sponsored by the iSee Taiwan Foundation and the Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation, has started establishing authorized prize with design association worldwide as well as inviting representatives to join the competition as juries. There were only 10 prizes authorized by design association in 2015 while in 2022 the TISDC already works with 22 international associations. The TISDC improves brand visibility and influences of the competition every year.

The International Poster Biennial in Mexico (BICM) was established in 1990 and has been active for more than 30 years. The BICM is one of the top 5 poster exhibitions in the world together with the Lahti International Poster Triennial, the International Poster Biennale in Warsaw, International Poster Triennial in Toyama, and the Colorado International Invitational Poster Exhibition. The BICM is also one of the top 3 biennials worldwide. It works with the most important cultural institution in Mexico, and it also gains recognition from the global design community. Poster designers flock to BICM every 2 years while a global design summit is also held biennially. The BICM has possessed more than 40,000 posters from around the world.

Instead of inviting international association to offer special prize like before, this is the first time that the TISCD jointly established a new Category F as well as authorized prize in the 17 BICM. The theme of Category F is Diversity in One World where students around the world were invited to submit their take on the 17 SDGs proposed by the UN. There are 41 finalists and 4 of them were selected as winners of the category. The City and Nature 2 by Xing Lu from China won the first prize, the Diversity of the World by Wenjie Yu from China won the second place, the City Tree by Hung Te Chung from Taiwan grabbed the third place, and the Stop Illegal Hunting by Ching Hsuan Chiang from Taiwan was awarded with honorable mention. Without doubt, friendship and cooperation is strengthened by the jointly established prizes. The cooperation of the 2 competitions provides a platform where new generation of designers get to work with one other. The TISDC has indeed successfully recognized by the international community and built a brand visibility. The 17 BICM award ceremony and winners as well as finalist exhibition were held on the October 27th this year at the Museo Franz Mayer in Mexico city.

Organized by the Ministry of Education and being the largest-scale global design contest for students, 2022 Taiwan International Student Design Competition will hold its award ceremony at Eslite Performance Hall in Songshan Cultural and Creative Park on November 29. In this year’s edition, Taiwanese students perform brilliantly, winning a total of 43 prizes, including the grand prix and the gold prizes of all three categories of Product Design, Visual Design and Digital Animation. Such an excellent result stands out at the international level and demonstrates the abundant energy for creativity and design of the students.

Marking the 15th anniversary this year, Taiwan International Student Design Competition has been widely recognized by the global design community as being both prestigious and credible and has served as the best example of the Ministry of Education’s success in promoting design education. The theme of this year’s edition, One World, resonates with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations and emphasizes the core spirit of the world as one family towards global sustainability. Students are expected to have the courage to face and reflect on issues related to sustainability, incorporate the concepts of the SDGs into their works, and fulfill their responsibilities as global citizens

This year, a total of 16,749 participating entries come from 867 school departments of 66 countries/regions. The composition of the jury panel is highly international. During the preliminary selection, 587 works were shortlisted by 112 professionals from 31 countries around the world; as for the final selection, the jury panel with 28 nationalities further picked 77 works as winners. The low finalist rate of 3.6% and the even lower winning rate of 0.4% highlight the preciousness of the winning entries.

In total, 77 entries have stood out and won the following prizes: 1 grand prix of the year and 1 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronzes, and 12 honorable mentions for each category (financed by the Ministry of Education); 22 international design association special prizes (jointly sponsored by iSee Taiwan Foundation and Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation); 3 Environmental Sustainability Award prizes (established by TPCA Environment Foundation).

The coveted grand prix is won by “Outlaw,” an animation created by Hao-Yang Peng, Yu-Ching Ling, Chia-Shan Liu, Yung-Hua Lu and Yu-Hua Yang from National Taiwan University of Arts. Telling a story about a pregnant woman hiding a secret and evading the police, this work demonstrates engaging narrative and drawing styles with just the right emotions and rhythm. Highly praised by the jurors as a mature piece of work with good quality, this animation wins the grand prix along with 400,000 NTD.

The gold prize of the Product Design category goes to “NGTF,” created by Shih-Hsuan Chiu from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. This is a friendly force-feeder kit that includes internal and external nasogastric tubes, a feeding rack, nutrients in foil packages and a liquid aspirator, and the kit is easy to carry and can thus reduce the inconvenience of eating out for patients. The jurors unanimously acclaim the high completeness of the product’s appearance, functions, details and branding, which can address the current pain points in the feeding process and find a more dignified way to care for patients.

The gold prize of the Visual Design category goes to “WILD VEGETABLES’,” created by Shu-Qi Yang, Ling-Ci Zhang, Tsai-Tzu Hsiao, Pin- Xuan Lin and Yu-Pei Chang from Chaoyang University of Technology. This work aims to promote the indigenous vegetables in Taiwan by designing “planting packages” with handmade seeded paper and paper-folded pots and by presenting, with both texts and images, seven harsh environments of climate change and the characteristics of 21 indigenous vegetables. The jury panel praises its meticulous layout and clear classification, which make this work refreshingly creative in terms of both visual and packaging design.

The gold prize of the Digital Animation category goes to “Ant Hotel,” created by Yu-Hsuan Teng, Jia-Jia Chang, Yu-Chien Chen, Ci-Syuan Chen and Ming-Hsuan Lin from National Taiwan University of Arts. Using the ants in a hotel as the symbol of human desire, this animation peeks at the story of each hotel occupant regarding human nature. The jury panel points out that this work boldly copes with a dark topic, while the suspense in its story plot brings a strong aftertaste, hence the decision of awarding it the gold prize.

The winner list of this year’s edition has been released on the official website of 2022 Taiwan International Student Design Competition (www.tisdc.org), and the award ceremony and the exhibition of the winning works will take place on November 29 at Eslite Performance Hall in Songshan Cultural and Creative Park (address: B1, No. 88, Yanchang Road, Xinyi District, Taipei City). After being held in Taipei, the exhibition will move to National Library of Public Information in Taichung (address: No. 100, Wuquan South Road, South District, Taichung City) between December 6 and December 15, 2022. You are welcome to have a visit.

The low finalist rate of 3.6% and the even lower winning rate of 0.4% highlight the preciousness of the winning entries, which have stood out to win the following prizes: 1 grand prix of the year and 1 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronzes, and 12 honorable mentions for each category (financed by the Ministry of Education); 22 international design association special prizes (jointly sponsored by iSee Taiwan Foundation and Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation); 3 Environmental Sustainability Award prizes (established by TPCA Environment Foundation).

Since 2015, TISDC has received the sponsorship of iSee Taiwan Foundation and Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation to cooperate with 22 international design associations. These global design partners are located across the five continents of Europe, Americas, Asia, Africa, and Oceania, and they all enjoy high reputation and a large scale. The 22 organizations, which have authorized the establishment of international design association special prizes in TISDC, include: Cumulus, International Council of Design (ICoD), World Design Organization (WDO), The Bureau of European Design Associations (BEDA), Pan Afrikan Design Institute (PADI), International Poster Biennial in Mexico (IPBM), among others, and the winners of these international design association special prizes this year came from Poland, India, Thailand, the United States, Taiwan, etc. Through such a cooperation mechanism, an international design exchange platform has been built, which can expand the influence of design from Taiwan, allow Taiwan to be seen through design, and provide young students worldwide with a stage where they can shine and unleash great potential.

In addition, TISDC has cooperated with the International Poster Biennial in Mexico (BICM) this year. By setting up a TISDC special prize in this competition, TISDC enjoys the opportunity to be co-listed with the United Nations Development Program and Amnesty International, which helps advance TISDC towards its goal of further internationalization and branding.

Taiwan International Student Design Competition (TISDC) 2023 Competition’s Promotional Campaign was held on the 7th stop at Taipei Jingwen High School!

The publicity team came to Taipei Jingwen High School on April 7th, 2023 (Friday). The founder Shih-Hsuan Chiu gave an exciting speech entitled “Achieve the society with design”, and won the 2021TISDC Product Design Environmental Sustainability Award and the 2022 Product Design Gold Award”. TISDC was very honor to be there at Jingwen High School, joined with the Sprout Project of Design-International Design Competition (IDC) project manager. There were about 168 teachers and students participating in the event!

The founder Shih-Hsuan Chiu started with the meaning of design. He explained how a product evolves to solve the difficulties people encounter in their daily lives, how design thinking improves human laziness, and how it advances technology and social development. In addition, the founder also shared his experience of participating and winning prizes in TISDC, encouraging students to actively participate in the competition to gain opportunities and train their ability to finish drafts within a limited time. The founder Chiu compared participating in the competitions to playing video games, trying to challenge repeatedly. No matter what the result was. It will always grow on the way of each attempt.

2023TISDC thanks again for the honor of being invited by Taipei Jingwen High School. We would also like to thank director Chen Yen Ting for his assistance in arranging the event, and the students for their active participation, which made the event a great success!
