The annual TISDC Circular Economy Campus Lecture has reached its fifth session! Today, we are honored to be at Shu-Te University’s Department of Animation and Game Design for the campus lecture on circular economy. We are also delighted to invite Director Huang Rui Feng as the speaker for this campus lecture.

The theme of this lecture is “NO RAIN, NO FLOWER.” Director Huang Rui Feng shares with the students that inspiration for creativity comes from the connections in life. Therefore, he advises students to break free from the limitations of their current mindset and not be bound by their own worldview. You may encounter things that you consider unnecessary, but it is difficult to establish connections if you don’t take action. It is best to do what you love, as that will bring you unique and different inspiration. Your creations may reach new heights as a result.

Furthermore, Director Huang Rui Feng also discusses the sense of loneliness he feels when working on animation and games. He believes that it is a gentle feeling, different from other works. Whether to cater to popular tastes is something worth contemplating. However, determining whether a work is good or not is actually difficult to define. In summary, he encourages students to constantly question themselves: Why am I doing this? Why am I doing it at this moment? Why am I the one executing it?

Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to Director Huang Rui Feng for participating in this campus lecture, as well as to Professor Zhang Chun Ya, Professor Yin Li, and the enthusiastic students who assisted with the circular economy lecture. We look forward to seeing excellent works from the students of Shu-Te University’s Department of Animation and Game Design in this year’s TISDC.

The theme “Equality” is in accordance with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015. The TISDC calls on students to treat others with the same level of respect and warmth. Students are encouraged to blend and co-create a more beautiful and diverse society through the power of design. This aims to realize the vision of ‘Equal Respect and Universal Love; Embracing Diversity and Fostering Harmony’.

The Taiwan International Student Design Competition (TISDC) received tremendous support from the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education who served as the organizer, and the iSee Taiwan Foundation, Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation, and TPCA Environment Foundation who were the sponsors. The Cultural Affairs Bureau, Chiayi City Government, Cultural Affairs Bureau of Kinmen County, and the European Foundation for Education and Cultural Exchange, all provide strong support.

On December 4, 2023 (Monday), the world’s largest American news agency, the Associated Press, published information about the 2023 Taiwan International Student Creative Design Competition awards ceremony in its international media promotion report. This announcement garnered coverage from 427 online media outlets worldwide, with the headline highlighting “Design from Taiwan Shines Worldwide.”Revealing the Results of the 2023 Taiwan International Student Design Competition, The news shows that the Design from Taiwan Shines Worldwide as the main axis 2023 Taiwan International Student Design Competition Announces the Winner List International Student Design Competition was initiated back in 2008 and is marking its 16th anniversary this year, in 2023. TISDC has now been widely recognized by the global design community as being both prestigious and credible and has served as the best example of the Ministry of Education’s success in promoting design education. This year, a total of 18,367 entries representing 1,161 universities, colleges, departments, and schools from 56 countries and regions participated in the competition. The jury panel consisted of international professionals. During the preliminary selection, 741 works were shortlisted by 112 professionals from 31 countries, with 38 jurors from Taiwan and 74 from abroad, accounting for 34% and 66% respectively. The final selection was held face-to-face and the judging panel consisted of professional judges from Taiwan and 21 representatives from international design associations, making it a diverse group of 41 judges from all five continents. Eventually, 85 works were selected as winners, which means only 4% of the works could be a finalist and the winning rate was even as low as 0.46%. It shows how rare and precious it is to stand out from all the other works. The prizes are listed as the following: 1 grand prix of the year and 1 gold, 3 silver, 3 bronze, and 12 honorable mentions for each category (sponsored by the Ministry of Education); 21 International Design Association special prizes (jointly sponsored by iSee Taiwan Foundation and Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation); 3 environmental sustainability awards and six regional special awards (established by TPCA Environment Foundation); one special award and two honorable mentions in collaboration with the Chiayi City Government.

With the sponsorship of iSee Taiwan Foundation and Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation since 2015, TISDC has been collaborating with 21 international design associations. These reputed global design partners are located across the five continents of Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Oceania. These 21 organizations, which have authorized the establishment of international design association special prizes in TISDC, include Cumulus, the International Council of Design (ICoD), the World Design Organization (WDO), The Bureau of European Design Associations (BEDA), Pan Afrikan Design Institute (PADI), etc. The winners of these international design association special prizes this year came from Poland, India, Thailand, the United States, Taiwan, and so on. The collaboration of global partners builds an international design exchange platform that can expand the impact of design from Taiwan, allow Taiwan to be seen and known for design, and provide young students worldwide with a stage where they can shine and unleash great potential.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) organized the largest international student design competition, the “2023 Taiwan International Student Creative Design Competition (16th TISDC) “, and held the award ceremony on December 1 at the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park Eslite Performance Hall. Republic of China (R.O.C., Taiwan) students demonstrated a wealth of creativity and design power in this year’s competition, with a total of 42 works winning awards, among which two works, “DASHAN HAWAN” and “Set Sail”, won the Gold Prizes in the categories of “Visual Design” and “Digital Animation”, which is a very fruitful result.

The 16th TISDC has gained recognition within the design community for its credibility and stands as a vital incubator for fostering young Taiwanese design talents. This year’s theme, “Compassion”, aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) encouraging participants to cultivate empathy, contemplate the relationships between people, the environment, and society, and creatively find solutions toward building a better future.

This edition drew participation from 56 countries and regions, involving 1,161 schools and departments, resulting in a staggering 18,367 entries, and thereby intensifying the competition significantly. The judges from 23 countries engaged in the initial selection, ultimately narrowing down to 741 finalists. Subsequently, a panel of jurors representing 28 countries selected 85 winning entries, reflecting a mere 0.46% of those winning the prizes.

The R.O.C., Taiwan students not only won Gold Prizes, three Silver Prizes, five Bronze Prizes, and 17 Honorable Mentions in the categories of “Visual Design” and “Digital Animation”, but also won the “Special Award of the International Design Organization” co-sponsored by the iSee Taiwan Foundation and the Sayling Wen Cultural and Educational Foundation, and the “Environmental Sustainability Award” sponsored by the TPCA Environment Foundation. This proves that the creativity and design power of the R.O.C., Taiwan students have become highly competitive at an international level.

The esteemed Grand Prix was awarded to Na Yu Jin and two fellow students from the University of Ulsan in South Korea for their creation of the “Emergency Shield”. This is a design for shielding the scene of a car accident by employing magnetic attraction to affix the shield onto ambulances or police vehicles. It aims to mitigate the risk of secondary collisions caused by distracted passing drivers while also shielding onlookers from potential psychological trauma. Crucially, it upholds the dignity of the accident victims. The jury unanimously applauded the design, granting it the Grand Prix and a cash reward of NT$400,000.

The Gold Prize in the Product Design category went to Yunho Kim and four fellow students from Kookmin University of South Korea. They developed “Ourhour”, a new product that integrates a wheelchair, stroller, and car safety seat, specifically designed for parents with disabilities. The jury highly lauded its modular design, exquisite aesthetics, meticulous details, and harmonious blend of safety and convenience. By catering to the needs of vulnerable groups, it definitely earned the Gold Prize.

The Gold Award in the Visual Design category was given to the team from China University of Technology, comprising Yi-Xuan Xie, Tzu-Ling Kuo, Tz-Chi Mao and Yu-Ru Hsu, for their work “DASHAN HAWAN”. This project transforms the unique cultural asset of indigenous tribes, “the mountain knife”, into a “Letter Opener Set”, promoting the aesthetic culture of the mountain knife. The jury commented on the maturity and comprehensive execution, as well as the students’ respectful and insightful observation of the indigenous peoples’ cultures, hailing it as a stunning and representative masterpiece of the R.O.C., Taiwan.

In the category of Digital Animation, the Gold Prize was awarded to “Set Sail”, a work by Yen-Ling Chen, Jo-Ti Lee, Yu-Ting Huang, Wei-Ju Wang, and Ting-Xiu Chen from the National Taiwan University of Arts. The animation, told from a third-person perspective, narrates a touching story of a little girl and her grandfather in the R.O.C., Taiwan during the 1960s and 1970s, exploring the relationship between love, sacrifice, and freedom, and the painting style is simple and warm. The jury was profoundly moved by the narrative and praised the exceptional artistic mastery and comprehensive visual effects, recognizing it as deserving of the Gold Prize for its professional excellence.

The list of winners for this edition has been released on the official website of the 2023 Taiwan International Student Design Competition (www.tisdc.org). The award-winning works will be exhibited from December 1st at the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park Eslite Performance Hall (Address: B1, No. 88, Yanchang Rd., Xinyi Dist., Taipei City). Following the Taipei exhibition, the display will relocate to the National Library of Public Information in Taichung City (Address: No. 100, Wuquan S. Rd., South Dist., Taichung City) from December 5th to 14th, 2023. All visitors are welcome to the exhibitions.

The 2023 TISDC Campus Lecture on Circular Economy has reached its third-to-last session! Today, we are delighted to invite Director Xu Zhiyang, the founder of Palm Design Studio, to conduct the campus lecture at Cheng Shiu University’s Department of Visual Communication Design.

The theme of this lecture is ‘Seeing the Seen and Unseen Values.’ Director Xu Zhiyang shares with the students the current situation in the design industry and the sustainable design cases of Palm Design Studio. He emphasizes that in this field where demand exceeds supply, it is crucial to stand out and excel by accumulating a wealth of work experience and participating in competitions.

Regarding sustainable design cases, Director Xu mentions that sustainability refers to the concept of long-term development. Achieving green sustainability in brand identity design is challenging, but efforts can be made to provide enduring visual planning, ensuring that clients do not need frequent updates to their overall visual identity. To stand out in design, Director Xu highlights the need to find the extraordinary in the ordinary and elevate it to the extraordinary.

Once again, we express our gratitude to Director Xu Zhiyang for participating in this campus lecture, as well as to Teacher Huang Pinjia for assisting in the circular economy lecture, and the enthusiastic involvement of Director Lin Yuliang, Director Wu Shouzhe, and Teacher Chen Jiangfu, along with the students. We look forward to seeing excellent works from the students of Cheng Shiu University’s Department of Visual Communication Design in this year’s TISDC!
