After the impact of the pandemic, the 7th “New Asia Design Workshop” finally took place from May 20 to May 21, 2023 at Asia University ! Organized by the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education (Taiwan), executed by the Department of Visual Communication Design of Asia University, and sponsored by the iSee Taiwan Foundation, Sayling Wen Cultural and Educational Foundation, and TPCA Environment Foundation (Special Award Sponsor), which designated a special award. Prestigious international designers, Takashi Honda from Japan, Akio Ogawa from Japan, and Panop Koonwat from Thailand, were invited as instructors for the workshop.

The workshop revolved around the competition theme “Compassion” and also extended the 17 SDGs sustainable development goals. Through the sharing of personal cases and design experiences by the three international designers, workshop participants were able to delve into their creative process and connect it with sustainable development goals. The instructors not only provided professional advice but also taught the participants how to transform their thinking logic when encountering design problems. The enthusiasm of students from different grades and fields who participated in the process resulted in a variety of great works through mutual exchange.

After the containment of the pandemic, a  physical workshop finally took place. This workshop provided a valuable opportunity for international lecturers and participants to interact and collaborate in design. They discussed and brainstormed in this creative environment . It was a change for participants to have face-to-face exchanges with designers from Japan and Thailand, sharing their design perspectives and experiences. This cultural exchange experience not only broadened the students’ horizons but also deepened their understanding of design. With the excellent translation team, the thoughts and viewpoints of these lecturers were effectively conveyed to the participants, enabling them to better comprehend and absorb the professional knowledge shared by the international lecturers. In addition, the collaborative teachers were also present to assist the students’ learning, providing them with a comprehensive learning experience. An estimate of 50 students from 35 different universities and departments in Taiwan participated in the workshop.

The workshop lasted for two days, during which the students learned and exchanged ideas. In this short period of time, the participants gained valuable experience and knowledge through various practices and discussions. During the presentation session, the students showed their design works. These works not only demonstrated their creativity and talent but also made a close connection to the sustainable development goals, reflecting their concerns for environmental protection, social justice, and economic development. We believe that through this workshop, the students will continue to raise their creativity and contribute to creating designs that resonate with people’s hearts. After the successful two-day learning experience, this year’s workshop concluded satisfactorily, and we look forward to the participation and creative contributions of students in next year’s workshop!

2023TISDC Campus Lecture :Circular Economy had arrived at its seventh session today! This time, we invited Ms. Zhan Lingjun, the founder of Picobaby and a designer, to join us at Department of Industrial Design of Tunghai University for the campus lecture on circular economy.

The theme of Ms. Zhan Lingjun’s talk is “Fun for Sustainability.” Together with her husband, she founded Picobaby, creating adorable robots from discarded circuit boards from Taiwan’s electronics industry. By recycling and reusing materials from the circuit boards, they transform the elements into cute robots. Many of these robot designs are inspired by everyday life and their unique creativity has garnered much love and appreciation, infusing new life into these discarded materials. In the eighteen years since its establishment, they faced significant challenges in the early stages because previously, no one reused these discarded materials. However, through her perseverance and the completion of her own ideal creations, electronic companies gradually took notice and started inviting collaborations. As a result, more people got to know them, and the importance of environmental utilization became known to everyone.

Ms. Zhan Lingjun shared her interdisciplinary experiences, all closely related to sustainable development, and also shared the difficulties encountered during the pandemic. However, these challenges did not discourage her. She developed a new type of environmentally-friendly portable soap, breaking through previous creative barriers. She also wanted to convey to everyone that fun and sustainable utilization is her continuous driving force. She also highly encourages students to participate in competitions to witness sustainable designs from other countries.

Once again, we express our gratitude to Ms. Zhan Lingjun for her participation in this campus lecture, and we appreciate the enthusiastic feedback from the Department of Industrial Design of Tunghai University. We believe that through this designer’s sharing, students will have a deeper understanding of circular sustainability and create wonderful works in this year’s TISDC competition!

2023TISDC event in Tunghai University Department of Industrial Design

The promotion of the 2023 Taiwan International Student Design Competition (TISDC) arrived at Fu-Hsin Trade & Arts School on June 8th. We were honored to have Principal Chen Xiaozong deliver an excellent opening speech and participate in the event, which allowed our team to successfully complete this promotion!

The competition, themed “Compassion,” echoes the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 proposed in 2015. The competition aims to encourage students to design creative and informative works. With the heartfelt introduction by Ms. Miira Lin about this year’s theme and the activities of the competition, the event promoted free participation opportunities for students and provided international design learning resources. This helped students gain a better understanding of the competition and generated more interest in participating in the 2023TISDC.

We would like to express our gratitude once again to Mr. Wang Qipeng for inviting us to promote the event at Fu-Hsin Trade & Arts School. We also thank Principal Chen and the 60 teachers and students who participated throughout the entire event, making the promotion activities a great success!

The 2023 Taiwan International Student Creative Design Competition Online Preliminary took place from August 23, 2023 (Wed) to August 29, 2023 (Tue).
Organized by the Ministry of Education (Taiwan), sponsored by iSee Taiwan Foundation, Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation, and TPCA Environment Foundation,  and executed by Asia University, marked the 16th edition of the Taiwan International Student Creative Design Competition. This year, it received a remarkable 18,367 submissions from 1,161 academic institutions in 56 countries and regions across five continents. The competition showcased a notable scale of participation and intense competition among entries.
The competition featured three categories: Product Design, Visual Design, and Digital Animation. It assembled a panel of 112 professional designers from countries including Taiwan, Singapore, France, Canada, Malaysia, Japan, Thailand, the United Kingdom, Ghana, the United States, and Australia. The online preliminary selection lasted for 7 days, with 42 judges for the Product Design category, 42 judges for Visual Design, and 28 judges for Digital Animation. After the strict and enthusiastic screening and the discussion of joint meeting of judging panel conveners, ultimately selected 204 product entries, 499 visual entries, and 38 animation entries, totaling 741 entries. These entries came from 23 countries and regions, including Taiwan, mainland China, South Korea, India, Singapore, Mexico, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Australia, Bolivia, Spain, Malaysia, Belgium, Japan, Poland, the United States, Switzerland, Thailand, Tunisia, Chile, South Africa, Bulgaria, and Hong Kong. Congratulations to these entries for qualifying for the finals. These finalists will pursue the Grand Prix, which is worth NT$400,000, and the other awards in each category in the Final Selection.
Regarding the overall trends in this year’s nominated works, the conveners of the Product Design, Visual Design, and Digital Animation categories all agree: the theme for this year, “Compassion,” aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set forth by the UN. It encourages students to tap into their compassion and creatively address global issues through design. Their creations incorporate empathy and profoundly reflect the relationships between individuals, showcasing their concern for society and the environment. This not only demonstrates the students’ design talents but also reflects their views on sustainability. We look forward to these young designers continuing their efforts, embodying the spirit of empathy, and contributing to the realization of the SDGs for a brighter future.
Next up is the final selection on October 12, 2023 (Thu), which will be composed of 16 domestic and 25 international designers who will form the jury panels to demonstrate the diversity and credibility of TISDC and announce the winners of this year’s competition. The list of finalists will be announced within one to two weeks. For more information.
